UFC 129 Takes Shape with Georges St. Pierre vs. Jake Shields Headlining

News

The UFC’s debut event in Toronto, Ontario is taking shape with Dana White having confirmed on Thursday that Georges St. Pierre’s defense of his World Welterweight Title against Jake Shields will top the bill at the world famous Rogers Centre. Its no surprise that the UFC’s very own Canadian hero will headline the open-air stadium show that will likely smash the North American attendance for an MMA event.

GSP will not be expected to fill Rogers Centre by himself, with the main card beginning to take shape. There’s a verbal agreement in place for Randy Couture to make a surprise spring return to the Octagon against Lyoto Machida, with The Natural hoping to prove that he can still hang against the elite fighters in the 205Ibs division. At the other end of the age spectrum in the light heavyweight division the UFC is looking to have prospect Phil Davis take a step up in competition bv facing Matt Hammil in a televised match. This would pit the NCAA Division I winner against the TUF3 standout and NCAA Division III winner. In the welterweight division Toronto native Brian Foster may face Sean Pierson and in the middleweight division Daniel Roberts says he’s facing Claude Patrick. Both fights conform to the UFC’s habit of looking to book as many Canadians as possible onto its Canada shows. For that reason don’t be surprised to see Mark Hominick challenge Jose Aldo for the World Featherweight Title in the co-main event if he can get past George Roop on January 22nd.
