Kue’s Korner: The Traces of WWE Evolving (John Cena, Linda McMahon)

Columns, Top Story

Bring the kiddies out, ladies and gents, and have ’em learn something. And what better place to get enlightened than Kue’s Korner? I’m the hopeless romantic of a host, Jonah Kue, and welcome to this little Korner of my ‘rasslin’ world. As my fingers are gracing the keys to write this post, I’m also viewing the Royal Rumble anthology. I believe I’m at ’95 now, and I’ve gotta say that Viscera did a world of good by getting rid of that Mabel gimmick, at least for the sake of losing the gold and purple. Anyway, this boy has decided to open a brand new twitter account solely based on this sports entertainment genre we all know and love. So, here’s some whoring:

What’s that saying about history doomed to repeat itself? Sure, it’s happened and will happen through the course of mankind. TNA retracing the footsteps of Turner’s old promotion is evidence of that. As of late, though, there’s been another hint of nostalgia casting their shadows through the dim lights of the WWE. This past Monday saw a disturbing kind of initiation process prompted by the ever-so-dastardly CM Punk, bearing everything from whippings, beatings, and fake suicide attempts. It also saw the lavender-laden John Cena deliver a fiery promo, indulging in his violent nature, and capping it off with a phrase that seemed all but forbidden in the land of TV-PG: “whuppin’ your ass”. Yes, many of us saw a glimpse of a time we thought was long forgotten. Our precious Attitude era.

Yes, Linda’s campaign has hit its finale. This would seem to less of a need to cater to parental guidance. And with characters and angles that might call for edgier promos for the sake of the build, it may seem like TV-14 is simply a few feuds away. Thing is, I don’t see this as a reflection of the past. Rather, I see this as something professional wrestling has needed in the most critical of ways: evolution.

Obviously, I’m not speaking of our favorite Horsemen-esque stable. It seems that, not only have WWE found a way to work TV-PG, they’re on the border of flourishing in it. With heels like Punk, Barrett, and Nexus, pushing faces such as Cena to the brink of their sanity, it’s all the good guys can do but sink to their enemies’ level. This, in most cases, creates the persona of the anti-hero. Yet, even in his character’s position, Cena has yet to lose the ethical code that he follows that has made him such a prominent face.

So, where do we go from here? We’re still in a world of black and white, but the shades of grey are creeping in. We’ve already seen that TV-PG is open to accepting an anti-hero in Randy Orton. And with feuds pushing the “good ol’” babyfaces, such as Cena, Edge, Orton, andKingston, to their mental limits, it will be interesting to see how the TV-PG characters of today adapt to the heels so prone to pushing the envelope. This has gotta be a catch phrase of mine, but it’s the honest truth: It’s an exciting time to be a wrestling fan.

Adieu.

I like my wrestling almost as much as I do my coffee. And I do love my coffee, as you can tell how much it's affected my skin tone.
