Tuesday Morning Backlash: WWE Does Right by Daniel Bryan on Monday Night Raw

Columns, Top Story

Daniel Bryan hasn’t had a lot to do lately. A lot of the IWC has begun to view him as a forgotten man in the WWE hierarchy, but this just isn’t true. The WWE know exactly what they’re doing with Bryan and what they’re doing is making the marks care.

Early on upon his return to WWE, Bryan was in and put over a lot of top talent. This push was only partially for the benefit of Bryan. A lot of what the company was doing was using a guy who was one of their best workers to see what they had in various young talents trying to move up the card. Facing Ted Dibiase, Dolph Ziggler, Miz and Jack Swagger was a tryout of sorts for top talent to see who was ready to move up. It is no accident that since then, both Miz and Ziggler have moved up the card. With no more room atop the card for the moment, Bryan’s role in this manner has decreased.

So, without using wrestling to get him over for now, WWE have decided to get marks interested in his character. Daniel Bryan has been, for weeks, the object of desire of both the Bella twins. This making him desirable makes fans envy him and how much of a normal guy he seems really helps younger fans think that by working hard and doing right they, too, can have beautiful women desire them. It also gives Bryan a chance to show his personality through facial expressions and mannerisms, both of which WWE (rightly) likely feels he’s better at than straight, scripted promos. He even got a really good match against John Morrison in last week, during this storyline, allowing him to remain a versatile character (and making it so he beats the Miz, Morrison beats him, and Miz beats Morrison, but we’ll see if they do anything with that down the line).

Of course, last week, WWE revealed the Bellas were merely trying to settle a bet with Bryan, potentially setting the face up for humiliation. That would have been terrible for the character, as he would be insulted, except with the Bellas the ones responsible, there would be no recourse for him in the ring to get revenge. WWE cleverly planned around this, however, by having it revealed on Raw last night:

This was brilliant, allowing Bryan, by being a good guy, to turn the tables on the heels, showing that another beautiful Diva would like him for being a good guy. This really puts over his character in a big way, especially with the marks and was so effective that Bryan became a top trending topic on twitter last night.

WWE might not always do right by their stars, but this angle has actually really helped Daniel Bryan. Remember, there are more ways to be put over than by winning matches.
