Aristotle Onassis Biopic in the Works

News, Projects

New York Magazine’s Vulture Blog is reporting that Fernando Meirelles is putting together a biopic of deceased billionaire shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis entitled Onassis.

Believed to be based off the biography “Nemesis: The True Story of Aristotle Onassis, Jackie O, and the Love Triangle That Brought Down the Kennedys” by Peter Evans, the film explores Onassis as more than just the man who married JFK’s widow. The film is looked at to be a sort of Greek Godfather, apparently, as it delves into Onassis’s shady business practices and the rampant allegations of criminal behavior he’s alleged to have been behind.

The book’s focus was on Robert F Kennedy’s relationship with the man. RFK had investigated Onassis’s sketchy international business practices and banned him from trading with the U.S. Evans wrote that their rivalry over control of, and access to, Jackie culminated in Onassis’s alleged financing of the assassination plot that led to Sirhan Sirhan killing the younger Kennedy brother.

What does it mean? If the Kennedy clan can get the History Channel to boot The Kennedys to Reelz Channel, part of me thinks that no one will want to touch this project because of it. The Kennedy clan is a very touchy subject to deal with, especially dealing with the fantasies & realities of the “Camelot” era of American politics and the implications thereafter. A best guess is that this will hit direct to video or fall apart do to lack of financing; projects involving the Kennedy clan directly have a hard time coming together.
