Rather shockingly, the very, very, very hyped debut of “The X Factor” on Fox delivered a disappointing 8.7 rating, only half of what “American Idol” debuted with this past January. Executive producer Simon Cowell desperately wants to beat “Idol” in the ratings battle, but that looks like a difficult battle now. Look for even tighter t-shirts on Simon and even crazier rants from Paula as they look for any ratings advantage.
