Nominations For The Independent Spirit Awards Announced

News

The Independent Spirit Awards is by no means an indicator of what will be nominated for Oscars, save for a few films that manage to sneak their way next to the bigger releases. This year those films may very well be the Fox Searchlight release Beasts of the Southern Wild, Silver Linings Playbook and Wes Anderson’s Moonrise Kingdom. All three films are spotlighted in this year’s Spirit Awards Best Feature category, along with Richard Linklater’s Bernie and Keep the Lights On.

Interestingly, Fox Searchlight’s other big push for Oscar, The Sessions, only received nominations for its acting (John Hawkes for Male Lead, and Helen Hunt for Supporting Female). Bruce Willis snuck in with a Supporting Male nomination for Moonrise Kingdom, over the likes of Robert De Niro for his supporting turn in Playbook. And Matthew McConaughey is a double acting nominee for his killer-for-hire performance in Killer Joe and as the strip club owner in Magic Mike.
