Lots of debuts this week!

  • Die #1 – It’s Kieron Gillen and Stephanie Hans, so I don’t really need to know what it’s all about to want to buy it. I think it’s a series about RPG players, which would explain the title.
  • Killmonger #1 – I love the way Christopher Priest used N’Jadaka in his classic Black Panther run, and don’t believe that anything more should be done with the character, especially since we just saw a new origin for him in the Rise of the Black Panther mini. Still, in its need to cash in on everything, Marvel created this series as an excuse to make some shirtless Michael B. Jordan covers, and so here we are. I’d normally skip this, but Bryan Hill is a good writer, and Juan Ferreyra is a fantastic artist, so I’m curious.
  • Snap Flash Hustle #1 – I’m at the point where just about any new Black Mask title gets a good look, and I liked Emily Pearson’s art on The Wilds. This might be coming home with me.
  • Winter Soldier #1 – It’s an odd time for a Winter Soldier miniseries, especially with Bucky featuring in both Captain America and the upcoming Invaders series (it’s like CB Cebulski is aiming to flood the market again). Still, I like Bucky, and this is by Kyle Higgins and Rod Reis, so it should be interesting.
  • X-Men: Extermination #1 – Why is the aftermath coming out before the last issue of the series? Sometimes I hate Marvel…
  • I’m also looking forward to new issues of Deathstroke, The Lodger, The Walking Dead, The Wicked + The Divine, Star Wars, Uncanny X-Men, and Ninja-K.

13-14 books this week. I rarely get multiple covers, but the variants for Shazam and Exterminated are gorgeous.

  • Adventures of the Super Sons #5
  • DC Nation #7 (appears to have been cancelled; we’ll see)
  • Deathstroke #38
  • Doomsday Clock #8
  • Green Arrow #47
  • Justice League #13
  • Ninja-K #14
  • Red Hood Outlaw #29
  • Shazam #1 (Covers A & B)
  • Unexpected #7
  • Winter Soldier #1
  • X-Men Exterminated #1 (Covers A & B)

Joey Smith

  • Doomsday Clock #8 – The story has started to move in a different direction and I’m anxious to see the fallout from the last issue.
  • Green Lantern #2 – I enjoyed the first issue overall. What’s got me onboard for the first few issues is that there isn’t going to be any big cosmic crisis, which became far too frequent in past runs of GL.
  • Shazam #1 – I’m looking forward to the creative team and I’ll give this a few issues to see where this goes. I was lukewarm on some stuff in the New 52 and I don’t think I’ve read anything on him since Rebirth started.
  • Batman #60 – The Batman/Penguin team up has me interested enough to read this issue and I like Janin’s art.
  • Deathstroke #38 – This title continues to be one of the most consistent overall.

Mike Maillaro

  • Defenders Immortal Hulk and Defenders Namor – My wife is a huge fan of the old school Defenders. To the point where she gets genuinely angry when Marvel refers to the Netflix version of Defenders with Daredevil, Like Cage, etc. She is very happy by the release of this lead in to a new Defenders series.
  • X-Men: The Exterminated #1 – Nice of Marvel to have so much of the follow up to Extermination BEFORE the series ended. Uncanny is already at issue 4 (also releasing this week) and now The Exterminated comes out too. Get your act together Marvel, this is just embarrassing…
  • Star Wars Age of Republic: Qui-Gon Jinn #1 – Qui-Gon Jinn is a character I always want to see more of. My sister and I used to write Star Wars fan fics about Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan back in the day. It’s nice to see Marvel looking at more of the Star Wars timeline.
  • Shazam #1 – I actually didn’t even realize there was a new Shazam series coming out. I don’t really love the more modern cynical version of Shazam, but I just read a bunch of old school Captain Marvel comics, so I will pick this one up out of curiousity…but if it continues to be New 52 Billy Batson, I doubt I will be on this series long.
  • Die #1 – Not to be confused with Image’s DIE! DIE! DIE! Die is about adults dealing with some kind of horror unearthed years ago when they were teenage role players. It’s by Gillen and Hans, so I am pretty curious to see how this one goes.
  • Prodigy #1 – A new series from Mark Millar. “Edison Crane’s not content being the world’s smartest man and most successful businessman—his brilliant mind needs to be constantly challenged. He’s a Nobel Prize-winning scientist, genius composer, Olympic athlete, an expert in the occult, and now international governments are calling on him to fix problems they just can’t handle.” Sounds a little generic, but Millar has been putting out a lot of great books, so I will likely be a customer here. Would have liked him to finish Magic Order first though…
  • Martian Manhunter #1 – Long been a fan of Martian Manhunter. His series from John Ostrander was horribly underrated. I hope this one gets a lot more traction!
  • Dark Ark #12
  • Moth And Whisper #4
  • Archie Meets Batman ’66 #5
  • Batman #60
  • Dreaming #4
  • Green Arrow #47
  • Green Lantern #2
  • Justice League #13
  • Nightwing #54
  • Red Hood Outlaw #29
  • Suicide Squad Black Files #2 (Of 6)
  • United States Vs Murder Inc #4 (Of 6)
  • Batman The Maxx Arkham Dreams #3 (Of 5)
  • Star Trek The Next Generation Terra Incognita #5
  • Team Sonic Racing #1 (One Shot)
  • Bully Wars #4
  • Curse Words #18
  • Kick-Ass #10
  • Doctor Strange #9
  • Immortal Hulk #10
  • Infinity Wars Infinity Warps #2 (Of 2)
  • Marvel Knights 20th #3 (Of 6)
  • Merry X-Men Holiday Special #1
  • Moon Girl And Devil Dinosaur #38
  • Shatterstar #3 (Of 5)
  • Star Wars #58
  • West Coast Avengers
  • Winter Soldier #1 (Of 5)
  • Ninja-K #14

Joe Smith – Yeah old school Defenders was something that I really enjoyed as a kid.

Mike Maillaro – I actually run a Defenders RPG group, which is all street level Marvel characters. I named it to pair it up with my friend’s bigger Avengers RPG…and my wife was adamantly trying to get me to change the name for weeks before I debuted it. She’s still annoyed about it. LOL!

Mike Maillaro is a lifelong Jersey Boy and geek. Mike has been a comic fan for about 30 years from when his mom used to buy him Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle Adventures at our local newsstand. Thanks, Mom!! Mike's goal is to bring more positivity to the discussion of comics and pop culture.
