- X-Force (Marvel’s best current comic!)
Babos: How’s Black Hammer? I saw the Black Hammer / Justice League cover and was intrigued. I recall reading about a BH series set in the past JSA style?
I think X-Force is well written with great covers, but the interior art is terrible imho.
Fulton: I love Black Hammer. You should totally read the first trade. It’s a JLA-type team that’s been trapped for years in a small farm community, trying to make a life for themselves. There’s a lot more to it than that now, but it’s great from the beginning.
I love the art in X-Force. I like that it is so different, and fits the writing so well. I’ve gotten increasingly bored with Marvel and DC house style art, and think that Burnett’s cartoony-ness works with the story. His Warpath is my favourite.
Babos: Cool.
What’s the interior art for BH like?
I’m trying to avoid X-Force type art. I do like stylized art as I was an early fan of Mike Mignol when there were complaints about his too dark style. X-Force interior art is just a bit rough for me and certainly jarring from the slicker cover art.
Fulton: Dean Ormston on Black Hammer. Falls somewhere between Mignola and Quitely? Maybe that’s not a great description.
Also, the side series can be skipped but if you love it, they provide some context.

- Ice Cream Man #11 – I genuinely hated the last issue of this series. Much like Brian K Vaughan’s Barrier, Ice Cream Man #10 used an extensive section of untranslated Spanish to tell the story. I know there are options like translation software, etc, but as a reader, I felt immediately disengaged to have to run to get external help to understand the story I was reading. To me, this takes away from the comic reading experience.
- Dial H For Hero #1 – The Hero Dial has been one of my favorite DC concepts for as long as I can remember. It’s just a great way to tell some crazy, outside the box stories. I have been looking forward to this new version since it was announced!
- Detective Comics #1000 – Tec hits its landmark 1000th issue! That is definitely something worth celebrating. Not sure I really care about bringing “Arkham Knight” into the comics, but Tomasi is usually very good, so I will give it a fair shot before judging too harshly.
- Sabrina the Teenage Witch #1 – In the last few issues of Archie, we’ve found out that Sabrina is Archie’s new girlfriend. Sabrina is one of my favorite characters in Archie, so I am happy to see she has her own series again. Though when are we going to get more Chilling Adventures of Sabrina??
