DC Comics Unveils First Look At Actress Javicia Leslie As CW’s Ryan Wilder As Batwoman! (Spoilers)

DC Comics reports.

First Look: Javicia Leslie Suits Up as the New Batwoman

If Bruce Wayne and Kate Kane have taught us anything about fighting crime in Gotham, it’s that you have to make sure you’re protected—both your body and your identity. It’s a lesson that the city’s newest protector seems to have taken to heart. With its eagerly awaited second season now shooting up in Vancouver, new Batwoman star Javicia Leslie just gave us our first look at her character Ryan Wilder wearing Kate Kane’s super-suit. It’s a behind the scenes shot that shows Leslie filling out the cowl quite nicely.

That’s the first official image of Wilder, The CW’s newest DC hero. Worth reiterating is that Wilder is wearing Kate Kane’s suit here, and as Leslie makes clear in her post, eventually Wilder will be putting her own spin on it. This is something she also mentioned during the Batwoman panel at the recent DC FanDome: Explore the Multiverse fan event, in which Leslie and Batwoman showrunner Caroline Dries revealed there had been much discussion about how to make sure Wilder’s eventual suit looks unique, but also still resembles a Black woman.

Replacing the departing Ruby Rose, Leslie’s Wilder is a wholly new version of Batwoman, with her own unique approach to keeping the people of Gotham safe. Described as likable, messy, a little goofy and untamed. Ryan spent years as a drug-runner, dodging the GCPD and masking her pain with bad habits. She’s the most dangerous type of fighter: highly skilled and wildly undisciplined. An out lesbian. Athletic. Raw. Passionate. Fallible. And very much not your stereotypical all-American hero.

While Leslie’s debut will offer something of a jumping-on point for Batwoman, if you haven’t yet seen the first season, it’s well worth a watch and is currently available for streaming on HBO Max and The CW website and app. Season 2 is scheduled to debut on The CW in 2021.

We also got a glimpse of the new costume during DC FanDome through DC Comics Publisher and DC Entertainment Chief Creative Officer Jim Lee art.

I’m intrigued by Season 2!
