While I have no scientific data, more people gave up on VHS and changed their home entertainment system to DVD after seeing The Ring right before Halloween in 2002. The film was about mysterious cassette tape that had the ability to kill people after they watched it. The movie was originally made in Japan as Ringu. A decade later Hollywood was ready to adapt it for American audiences. The film was a horror sensation and spawned two sequels. All three are being upgraded to 4K UHD (along with Blu-ray versions) in The Ring Collection and arriving in March. There’s plenty of bonus features to watch if you survive.
