Dara Singh, India’s most popular professional wrestler, passed away Thursday morning at the age of 83 due to cardiac arrest.

He began his career wrestling internationally in the 1940s before finally retiring in 1983. After leaving the squared circle he would go on to have a successful movie career in India. The Wrestling Observer Newsletter would induct him into its Hall of Fame in 1996.

Regarding the passing of Singh, William Regal wrote on Twitter, “Very sad indeed to hear of the passing of the legendary Wrestler Dara Singh. I wrestled for him in India in 1992. A truly elegant gentleman.”

Jim Ross also tweeted, “Legit legend. Big rival of Lou Thesz. RIP.”
