Director Announced For Martyrs Remake

News, Projects

Earlier this year it was announced that the producers of Twilight were eying a remake of Martyrs, the hardcore French horror film from director Pascal Laugier. Now, LA Times is reporting that Daniel Stramm, the director of The Last Exorcism, has been hired to direct the remake.

While I mostly enjoyed The Last Exorcism, I can’t imagine hardcore fans of Martyrs are going to be happy with this news. To be fair, though, they probably wouldn’t be happy with any news regarding a remake of the film. But with the interview Stramm gave with the LA Times, fans aren’t given much to work with in the hopes department. Here’s a quote:

Martyrs is very nihilistic…The American approach [that I’m looking at] would go through all that darkness but then give a glimmer of hope. You don’t have to shoot yourself when it’s over.”

If that isn’t enough to drive fans of the original film mad, how about remake producer Wyck Godfrey comparing his vision of the film to Forest Gump?

More news regarding Stramm and Martyrs is promised in the upcoming days. In the meantime, just remember that nobody will force you to see the remake. Just like nobody will force you to see the terrible depressing original film.
