John Byrne’s New Super-Hero Team TRIO Debuts In May – Targets His Alpha Flight & Fantastic Four Fans?
by John Babos on February 20, 2012

As a huge fan of iconic writer-artist John Byrne, I have really enjoyed his Next Men series and was so glad IDW encouraged him to have that series return and wrap up it up as Byrne had intended. With Next Men wrapping up after a few issues of Next Men: Aftermath in the early part of 2012, many have been wondering what new super-hero’ish Byrne book was on the hortizon.

We learned last month that TRIO was the answer and IDW was going to be its publisher. Following some interior art reveals, we now have IDW’s solicit for the May 2012 shipping debut issue.

John Byrne has done a lot of work across many companies in his storied career. He’s had classic runs for Marvel with Uncanny X-Men, Fantastic Four, Alpha Flight, West Coast Avengers and others. He’s also done some great work at DC Comics most notably his stewardship of the post Crisis of Infinite Earths Superman reboot,Wonder Woman, New Gods and others. And, naturally, in the 1990s with Dark Horse and now with IDW he’s done Next Men, as well as some Star Trek for IDW.

So, why does IDW’s solicit ONLY mention fans of two books of Byrne’s from Marvel Comics tenure? WHA…. ??? Fantastic Four is a no-brainer, but why not mention a non-Marvel book to to try cast a wider net?

I’m still intrigued, and I will pick it up, but that part of the solicit seems… odd.

The oddest part of the solicitation is the ZAP! POW! BAM! part. John has said for years how much he hates that and blames the original Batman show for making people to this day think of comics as childish and something to be made fun of.

For the record, Chris Ryall said that John Byrne wrote the solicitation so he’s the one who decided to only mention the Marvel books.

I think Trio will be John’s most successful book in years. A lot of his fans have been waiting for him to return to superheroes on a monthly basis.

Just talked to the guy who owns my LCS. I’m getting two of every issue of Trio. One for me and one for my kids. They really think this looks neat.

Sorry for another comment John but I was talking with Chris Ryall on Twitter. I’ve known Joe Sinnott was doing a cover since December and have been talking with him about it ever since. Well tonight he finally showed the variant cover. Looks great!
