DVD Reviews: Paw Patrol (Brave Heroes Big Rescues) & Blaze and the Monster Machines (Rev Up and Roar)

As soon as kids get motor skills, they get a bit of a rush pushing motor vehicles around the floor. Whether it be Tonka trucks, toy trains or Matchbox cars, their little hands must make those wheels spin. Paw Patrol: Brave Heroes Big Rescues and Blaze and the Monster Machines: Rev Up and Roar are two DVD collections that make cars, trucks and motorcycles fun to watch in two different yet fantastical situations.

Paw Patrol is about a pack of helpful dogs that dress up in various rescue uniforms and zip around in modified vehicles to save all sorts of people, critters and mythological beasts. Brave Heroes Big Rescues includes six episodes from the Nickelodeon series. “Pups Save Jake,” “Pups Save the Parade,” “Pups Save a Mer-Pup,” “Pups Save a Friend,” “Pups Save a Stowaway” and “Pups Bark With Dinosaur” put them into action. The dinosaur episode was one of my daughter’s favorite of the batch. This makes since it brings together puppies, dinosaurs and cool trucks.

Blaze the the Monster Machines: Rev Up and Roar gives us pure talking cars with eyeballs on the headlights. The series definiately appeals to the kids who love Pixar’s Cars. But my daughter is not a fan of the pure car and truck universe. She likes the people or animals that get behind the wheel. Sure there’s a kid who ride around in Blaze, but he doesn’t seem to be really driving. The four episodes on Rev Up and Roar include “Zeg and the Egg,” “Dino Dash,” “Gasquatch” and “Dragon Island Duel.” Gasquatch is a cool ironic name for an electric car though. There is a bonus Blaze of Glory video storybook.

Here’s Josie’s reviews of the two DVD collections:

The video is 1.78:1 anamorphic. The transfers look great for the animation. The audio is Dolby Digital 5.1. The action sounds good without being overpowering for little ears. There are French and Spanish dub tracks. The episodes are Closed Captioned.
