Body Blows: When Good Fights Go Bad, Baseball Cards, and Olympians.

Columns, News, Results

Trent has been a busy man lately. Work has been kicking my ass and in addition to the 80 hours I’m likely to log this week, I need to get my apartment in order so I can move into my new house next week. What does this mean to you? It means you get an awesomely abbreviated version of Body Blows. Take it and like it my minions.

Acelino Freitas vs. Zahir Raheem

U-G-L-Y. I had high expectations for this fight and it was one I had been looking forward to. Unfortunately it turned out to be as pleasant as a kick in the balls. Raheem used his slick boxing skills to defeat Erik Morales last year while Freitas is known for his fight-ending power. The table was set for a fine meal but these two decided to crap on everyone’s dinner.

Zahir Raheem was not the boxer he was against Morales. Raheem seemed to lack focus and couldn’t get into a rhythm. As a result, Raheem was sloppy in the ring. Fighters don’t usually clinch in the first two rounds, let alone lightweights. Raheem was more than happy to break that unwritten rule. These bush league maneuvers caused Freitas to become the whiny little bitch he can so often be. Freitas slowed down the fight even more by complaining about everything. The good thing about boxing is that when your opponent pisses you off, you can hit him in the face. Freitas opted to nag the referee as if he was married to him.

Luckily, a friend of mine gave me a call during this fight and told me about his day of betting. He didn’t do very well which always makes for a better story. It was a far better story than this fight. Freitas won the fight by split decision, due to his propensity to throw punches. Raheem was more inclined to throw a hip toss than a hook.

Results From Last Week

– Jameel McCline earned a unanimous decision over Rob Calloway.

– Super Middleweight prospect Allan Green knocked out Donnie McCrary in the sixth round. Green was down in the third and looked hurt. Joe Calzaghe may be next but this fight proves Green isn’t ready.

– Samuel Peter knocked out the 7-footer Julius Long in the first round of ESPN’s Friday Night Fights main event. Peter is still a force to be reckoned with and he will be a World champion.

– The Petersons both remained undefeated as Lamont Peterson defeated Mario Jose Ramos and his brother Anthony Peterson defeated Jermaine White.

– Ivan Calderon retained his WBO Minimumweight Title with a 9th round TKO of Miguel Tellez. I had a Donrus Diamond King baseball card of Ivan Calderon but I don’t think it’s the same guy.

– Alex Arthur won his super featherweight bout against Sergey Gulyakevich via technical decision when the fight was stopped in the 7th due to an accidental headbutt. When the fight stops because of a cut that was ruled accidental, the winner is determined by who leads on the scorecards.

– 2004 United States Olympic Gold Medalist Andre Ward defeated Andy Kolle to remain undefeated. Ward won in the 6th round when the referee stopped the fight due to swelling on Kolle’s eyes.
