UFC News: Shamrock/Ortiz III, HBO Deal & The UK

News

Some UFC news, according to the Wrestling Observer newsletter (click here for subscription information):

– Dana White says there should be four UK shows in 2007, the first in April, before heading to the rest of Europe. Regarding HBO, he said “There’s never a deal until a deal is done… but, yeah, we’re going to do a deal with HBO. HBO is getting pulled, kicking and screaming, into this thing. They’ve obviously spent millions of dollars on boxing. Ross Greenberg (who heads HBO Sports) has boxing gloves running through his veins. It’s a real kick in the (balls) for all the boxing people to see this thing coming up the way it is. It is what it is. It’s here. It’s not going anywhere. This is what all the young people like. It’s going to be around for a while.”

– The Seminole Hard Rock Cafe in Hollywood, Florida, the venue for the 10/10 show, sold out all 5,000 tickets in one hour, the fastest sellout in both building and UFC history.

– Ken Shamrock spoke about retirement in a recent interview with Alex Marvez: “It depends on how I feel after this fight and whether I win or lose doesn’t matter. I want this fight and I want it bad. I believe I’m going to win. After that I’ll decide how I feel… I think where I’m at now on this fight is I get a chance to go in and do what I said I wanted to do, which is put on a good fight. I’ve gotten the opportunity to do that. The second most important thing is giving back to the fans. They all paid money to watch. They stepped up and made it one of the biggest fights in pay-per-view history and they were screwed. We didn’t give them a fight. This is giving back to them. That’s what I’m excited about, and I’m excited to be going against Tito. After I’m done, I’m hoping that Tito can put away that cocky attitude. Win, lose or draw (we can say) ‘We did this together, drawing all those buys’. Bam, ‘the feud’ is over.”
