Tim, are you linking anything this week?

I should, but…I got nothing. Sorry.

What I’ve Read Recently

First off getting comics on Friday sucks. It completely throws my schedule off. Plus I’ve not had enough time to read what few books I picked up last week. Darn you end of the year holidays!

You said it!

Teen Titans #54 – I liked the stuff with Bart and Jamie. I liked the flash-forward. I liked the stuff with Tim. I even liked the multiple artists. The story wasn’t the clearest thing in the world, but I didn’t hate it.

I thought that it was probably better than anything since the OYL flip, but that’s not saying much. Part of my sour grapes though is that I hate time travel stories in which the whole thing was a waste since it all is going to end up the same anyway. Thus, the epilogue? Boooo!

Sinestro Corps Secret Files & Origins – I loved this book so much. I’ve been a huge fan of the GLC for as long as I can remember so reading this had me drooling. This was probably my second favorite Secret Files after the Starman one.

This is what Secret Files should be! Restored my faith in the whole darn thing. Too bad the next one will inevitably disappoint.

Crime Bible #3 – I love the covers for this mini. I love the artists. Every artist’s style really matches up with the story they’re telling. I do wonder where Clark will land. I wouldn’t mind seeing him on Nightwing.

Yes, but what of the story? A bit…underwhelming, no?

Batman & the Outsiders #3 – This book would rock if Joe Kelly took over and quickly shifted the line up and title to The Elite. I think I’m dropping this book.

The only problem with that plan is, then it would be The Elite and no one enjoys that.

Justice League of America #16 – I liked this issue, but I liked the Tangent characters. I’d like to see the back up artist, Allan Jefferson, get a regular gig. I liked his stuff.

Wasn’t the whole thing just a big waste though? The events of whatever issue of Ion that was are repeated, except this time the JLA shows up to fix things up, not just Kyle. Bland, bland, bland.

Checkmate #21 – Rucka and Trautmann did a masterful job of giving a minor character a legacy and making it interesting. Still I was longing for more actual “Checkmate” stuff.

I think next issue will deliver on that. I hope anyway. Still, a good read.

Catwoman #74 – I’ve run out of words of praise for this title. Wait, maybe not. This book always has some great action sequences. Lopez y Lopez are amazing storytellers and Pfeifer does stupendous things with character. There, now I’ve praised this book as much as I can.

I wholeheartedly agree, but I still can’t get excited about the “Selina on the Salvation Run planet” arc we are now entering. Why align with such a bad mini? Hasn’t Pfeifer suffered this indignity enough when he wrote Amazons Attack? Or is this just karmic justice for that very same offense?

Gotham Underground #3 – Nice seeing Zsasz again. Talk about your worst case waking up scenario. I am interested in Johnny Stitches. And the Spoiler. And Penguin’s new hired help. But I’m not curious about Wildcat’s presence; I’ve known that he and Babs were hooking up for awhile now. Babs has a thing for older guys and Ted wanted some “Afternoon Delight”.

I was surprised to see Ted actually in his clothes though. Dude loves getting naked!

Anyway, this mini, unlike Salvation, is growing on me. Most characters still aren’t quite in character, but it is closer and I have a silly thing for Calafiore’s weirdly angular art. Who the heck was Penguin’s goon squad, anyway?

Action Comics #860 – I’m so glad to see Frank and Sibal illustrating a stranger from a strange world on a monthly basis again. But why does Brainy have to be bad? Talk about living up to a stereotype.

Blue Beetle #22 – Up until this issue I didn’t really hate the Reach. But what they with did to Tovar was just wrong. That poor duped artificial intelligence. It was just as heartbreaking as Jamie’s pop and La Dama.

Love me some Tovar. Love me some Jamie’s parents. LOVE ME THIS BOOK! Buy it! Please….

Legion of Super-Heroes #37 – I didn’t really like it. I though that Shooter’s script lacked the futurespeak that I’ve come to expect in the Legion. It didn’t sound nearly “future” enough for my tastes.

Batman #672 – I can see why some people didn’t like this issue. But when it comes to Morrison, I’m the type who enjoys the ride as opposed to trying to anticipate the destination. And his run has some nice scenery.

Plus Bat Mite!

Eh, who am I kidding? I have no excitement for Bat Mite whatsoever.

I am, however, intensely curious to see if and when Morrison is going to bring this whole 3 other Batmen meta arc to an end and what it is all going to mean.

Countdown Arena #3 & 4 – I liked all the battles. I liked seeing Breach again. I liked Monarch the evil guy. I liked all of the characters introduced. I liked this mini.

Green Lantern #26 – The scene between Sinestro and Hal was great, especially the payoff. I hated seeing Amon Sur die. This poor character continues to be wasted. (Now, quite literally. Rimshot, please!)
And man, whenever John appears he reeks of overcompensation on Johns’ part. So much so that I kind of hope that the rumors of MF Grimm writing a John Stewart book are true.

Since I largely dug Sinestro Corps War and I like McKone’s art, I’m giving the book another shot. This first issue was…decent. I’m not throwing in the towel by any means, but I wasn’t made into a believer quite yet either.

The Flash #235 – I really like Williams II’s art on this book. It really works with the character. It was nice to see the backup tale tie into the main story. But I really can’t wait for Tom “Hourman” Peyer to jump on this book. I’m so excited!

I’d like to take a second to address poor Mr. Waid, who apparently felt a bit forced off this book by fans’ negative reactions. First, sorry, I hate to think me not liking your book undercut your ability to write it. I didn’t mean that.

Second, I’m fine with Wally married, I’m fine with Wally with kids. What I’m not so fine with is a Wally who I feel no connection with at all anymore or kids that are, to be honest, kind of sucky. For a writer who made Wally three dimensional to now write the man as a 2-D whirling dirge of cardboardness is very, very disappointing. The not so well written kid thing though…that’s just the icing.

Countdown #19-17 – I really felt for Ray Palmer. I wanted him to have his happy ending. It sucks that the heroes had to come and ruin things. That was the best issue of this book in forever. And is it wrong that I loathe the Monitors so much that I’m actually rooting for Monarch to win?

To quote the ad campaign for Aliens v. Predator, no matter who wins, we (the readers), lose.

Crossing Midnight #13-14 – More good stuff on this title. Great covers compelling story, and terrific cliffhangers. This book is getting good.

Ex Machina #33 – Harris did a great job on this issue (as always). Hundred’s vision was pretty sweet looking. And the stuff with Hundred’s face was stellar too. And he’s throwing his hat into the Presidential race at the right time too.

I could see an Obama/Hundred ticket. That might work for me.

CPTSFRP – Superman/Wonderwoman – Eh, nothing special. It was fun seeing the genders switched on this Earth. But that’s about it.

Brave & the Bold #9 – Props to Waid and Perez for making an issue with three team ups (including Blackhawk and the Boy Commandos) so enjoyable. Those pages with the sentient Book of Destiny were uber creepy.

Ultimate Power #9 – Gee, that happened. Any idea when I’m going to get back to the Supreme Power universe and have that cliffhanger wrapped up?

Metal Men #5 – Tons of exposition, but what a fun book. I loved the proto-Metal Men. I loved the moments with the two Magnus’. I loved the wacky sci-fi tech-speak (Jim Shooter, take notes). I’m going to miss this mini when it ends, but I’ll probably follow Rouleau wherever he goes.

Teen Titans Year One #1 – I’ve got to admit: I liked this issue. Young Wally was fun. I’m perplexed by Garth’s portrayal, but it was interesting. The stuff with Bats and Robin was pretty powerful. It’s funny because as I was reading the issue, I thought how cool it’d be if the Titans got together to save their mentors who were being controlled.

Detective Comics #840 – Nguyen’s art is so welcome on this title, especially after my newfound favorite book, Wildcats 3.0. The convos between Ra’s and Bats were nice. But I’m so irked that Bats would lock up Ra’s like that. It sucks, couldn’t they have just been good neighbors? Or better yet not-so good neighbors, like Seinfield and Newman.

“We’ll bring Ra’s back…so we can drug him and leave him incapacitated in the bowels of Arkham.”

“Genius.”

I actually liked the issue quite a bit, but boy, I’m just madder than ever about the crossover that preceded it since it led to the Demon’s Head being taken off the board again almost immediately.

Coren is checking his horoscope…of EVVVVVVVVVIL!

What’s the deal with this new Libra character? Is he someone new? Is he someone old with a new identity? Why does he look so much like Hourman?

Oh Libra! It’s funny that DC is bringing the character back. When I first saw that teaser image of the guy I knew I’d seen him before but I couldn’t quite remember where. I knew it was in the old Who’s Who. At first I thought he was part of the Forgotten Villains, but I finally tracked him down to the Injustice Gang of the World entry.

The thing about Libra is that he really only appeared in two issues; Justice League of America #111 & #112. Y’see Libra had put together this group villains composed of Poison Ivy, Chronos, Tattooed Man, Scarecrow and Shadow Thief. He put them together to face the Justice League because he was all about a balance of good and evil. He even gave them a satellite in the opposite orbit of the JLA’s satellite. But since these weren’t the greatest of villains he gave them a back up device to use in case they were bested by the JLA members.

Pretty simple, right? Well the devices were actually used to siphon off the hero’s powers, leaving them at 50%. Then he used another device to try to siphon half of the energy in the universe into his body. Needless to say his plan backfired and he found himself disintegrated and absorbed into the universe.

And that was the end of that.

We never learned his identity or where he was from.

So who is this new guy or is it even a new guy? Who knows? But since he’s a villain from the satellite era of the JLA, it’s a safe bet that Brad Meltzer remembers him. And we know that Brad’s used that satellite before. Apparently Libra’s going to be coming back and it’s anyone’s guess what he’s going to be doing this time.

Does Libra sound like something you might be interested in, Tim?

He does sound like someone I might be interested in, Mathan. Although his old costume? Way better than that generic new one.

I’m not saying Michael S. is a test tube baby, I’m just saying that he could be

In the most recent issue of Teen Titans (issue # 54), at the end, it shows Luthor, M’gann and Tim looking at his cloning attempts). I recognize Conner and Bart, but who’s the girl on the right? For the life of me, I can’t place it.

There are actually two females that are in cloning tubes; there’s another on the left.

You’ve got to imagine that they’d by females that Tim had strong feelings for. I mean we know why he’s cloning Bart and Conner. So if I had to guess I’d say that it’s either Batgirl, Spoiler or Raven.

I mean those are the three female characters that I’d guess Tim would want to return to the living. And in that storyline we saw that Batgirl and Raven were alive and well, just as Bart and Conner were. But there’s a chance that Batgirl and Raven were killed at some point in the future and Tim wanted to bring his friends back.

Ravager might also be a candidate. But those are just guesses on my part.

Tim, do you have any guesses who might be in those cloning tubes?

Definitely not Ravager, as a big deal was made about her not being alive in the Titans Tomorrow-verse and that being of some importance. So no way Luthor (of that U) would be cool with that.

As for my guess…I don’t really know. Raven and Batgirl are good choices since they are the only two dark haired woman in Tim’s life that I can recall. Spoiler’s blond, Ravager’s white haired (and no way it is her), Wonder Girl’s blond (and still alive) so… Unless it is Ariana. But does anyone even remember her anymore?

Neil demands we play favorites

Now that Green Lantern/Sinestro Corps Secret Files and Origins is out, who are your favorite GLs and Sinestro Corpsmen (and women)? Let’s say, for the sake of making this more interesting, they have to be somewhat obscure (not totally, but let’s not go for the “easy” ones, Hal, Kyle, John, Guy, Kilowog, Sarakk, Arisia, etc.).GLs, for me, would be Graf Toren, Aamanita, and Bodikka. Sinestro Corps would be Kryb and Lyrssa Mallor.

I’ll gladly gush about my favorite Corpsmen. I loved this book so much that I could barely focus enough to read it, I kept wanting to see what the next page held. I definitely felt like a kid again when I was holding this book.

Olapet of Sector 345 – I loved Green Lantern Corps #217-219 where Sinestro and the MadGod Sector 3600 faced off against the remnants of the GLC. And Olapet got such a cool gimmick with the pseudo immortality thing.

Von Daggle of Sector 700 – I really dug his debut last year and I hope to see more of the dude. Plus who doesn’t love the Durlans?

Would’ve made my list if you hadn’t beat me to it.

Rot Lop Fan of Sector 911 – His debut was the first Alan Moore story that really impressed me. And it had Willingham on the art.

Should be on everyone’s list. Everyone’s.

Penelops of Sector 1355 – This guy was the first GL and really captured my imagination. I was so visually slayed by this GL. He’s a giant eye with tentacles! How cool is that? Plus he first appeared on a cover and then he got a back up tale.

Dalor of Sector 2813 – Again, this is another GL that I’ve liked from back in the day.

Barreer Wot of Sector 3014 – I was a fan of Arkkis Chummuck, so I’m curious to see more of this guy.

Those were pretty much the only Green Lanterns that I can sort of champion. There were some others with cool back-stories that’ll hopefully be touched upon again. Hell I wouldn’t even mind if Green Lantern Corps were turned into a sort of Classified book with different creators tackling different members of the Corps.

But on to the Sinestro Corps:

Gleen of Sector 312 – I just like the fact that Johns is doing his best to keep the whole space gremlin thing alive. And it makes sense he’d be part of the Corps.

Amon Sur of Sector 2814 – I’ve been a fan of this character since he returned to hassle Kyle. I was happy when he ended up part of the Corps and I was saddened when he died. But hopefully he’ll be part of the Death Corps.

And that’s it. Again, there were some interesting back-stories going on but the Sinestro Corps seems pretty bland.

And of course there were some dead Green Lanterns that I miss.

Driq – Sure the guy was dead when we met him in Green Lantern Corps #217 but he a GL whose ring kept him alive. I’m going to miss the guy.

Flodo Span – I loved how this dude took down the MadGod Sector 3600. I just wish I’d had the chance for one last good-bye. And I’m curious how he died.

Charlie Vicker – Why is this guy “presumed dead?” He was killed when Grayven attacked Rann. Does this mean that he’s really alive?

But of course this issue also brought out the fanboy in me. Here are some of my qualms:
One wonders why Haasp and Harvid are brothers from two different sectors.

The same way Patrick and I are brothers from different towns, I suspect. The ever increasing family ruiner called… DIVORCE!!!!!!

Or, you know, they just moved out after college or whatever.

If Barreer Wot is from Sector 3014 and from the same planet as Arkkis Chummuck then why does Fatality represent Sector 1313? Toomey VI (Wot and Chummuck’s homeworld) and Xanshi (Fatality’s homeworld) were in the same sector because Chummuck’s predecessor was Xanshi’s GL.

Medphyll? Really? So I guess Jack Knight never went into space. Since Medphyll is a) still alive and b) not a bad guy, it’s fair to say that he never met Jack Knight. Just like Jor-El never met Jack Knight. Man, James Robinson must be spinning in his grave right now.

Don’t worry everyone, James Robinson is not actually dead. Mathan is simply employing a literary trope to express that Robinson would be very disappointed in how his series is being treated in this bold new DCU. Do not sound out sympathy cards.

Tim, you’ve got favorite Corps members, right?

Sure enough, I do. However, it should be noted that, unlike Mathan, I am not as intimately familiar with the Corps (Green or Sinestro) so some of mine are based purely on backstory.

Laira– Of all the Lanterns that got offed during Emerald Twilight, she was the only one that I can remember being disappointed about (except Kilowog, but I actually knew who Kilowog was). If I’m honest, I’m not quite sure the why of my attachment to her, I just know that she made an instant impression and I can remember thinking, “that’s too bad” when Hal mowed over her like she was just so much grass.

Lin Canar– Have to love the tragic hero trying to make his past mistakes right. And his past mistakes include creating a world killing plague, well, all the better.

Meadlux– The only Corpsmen in glasses is a psychologist? What’s up with the stereotyping folks? I’m heading in that direction and I have better than perfect vision, so there.

Anyway, I have to support my professional brother. Plus, it makes a whole lot of sense that a group of space cops would want to have a psychologist on the ready. After the War, I gotta think this guy’s going to be getting a lot of action, even if we don’t get to see it.

Tomar Tu– I love, love, LOVE the fish fin headed, bird beaked aliens and, frankly, I don’t owe you a reason why. But, I will give one nonetheless. They’re awesome. And Tomar-Tu carries on that proud tradition. My second favorite alien Lantern.

Torquemada– And now my first. Torquemada, baby. First, how great is it that there is a guy running around the universe with a power ring who happens to share his name with one of the most famous torturers of all time? That’s genius you just don’t get in comics these days. Whoever created him and thought, “Yes, this is the name I will give him” is brilliant and deserves a bronze bust displayed in the Smithsonian Gallery of Being Simply Great.

Second, and more seriously, a practitioner of magic, perhaps the universe’s most illogical endeavor, involved in the one group that’s supposed to be all about reason? That’s conflict just waiting to happen. And you’ve gotta think with the Black Lanterns on the way, a guy who’s been known to fight the Necromancers of the Black Circle is due for a little spotlight.

And now, a few honorable mentions:
Tahr– Dig his costume.
Hannu– The whole “won’t use his ring” angle is pretty smart.
Relok Hag– Dude’s a centaur. Nuff said.
Arx– Another great costume.
Isamot Kol and Vath Sarn– Love that relationship.
Vandor– Very cool costume #3.

On the Sinestro side, it was a bit more difficult since we haven’t seen much of any of these guys. But, for now, here are my choices.

Romat-Ru– First, his name is basically Tomar’s in reverse. Second, see Tomar.

Feena Sik– I once wrote a story in high school about murderous paintings coming to life and I’ve always been fascinated/terrified of that idea. So Feena gets the nod for tapping into that fear all over again.

Scivor– You ever see the X-Files episode, Cerulean Blue? All about the guy who could persuade you to do almost anything just by talking to you? That’s my favorite X-Files episode of all time and I was a HUGE fan for the first five or so years so it had plenty of competition. Scivor seems like the same sort of guy and I love master manipulators.

Low– Great design, way creepy gimmick with the laying eggs in the host thing.

Murr the Melting Man– First, yay for alliteration. Second, a Sinestro Corps member that makes the rest of the Corps nervous? Golden.

That Bootleg Guy wears an eyepatch and says “arr” a lot

In the music world, an entire sub-industry has been built upon leaked or otherwise “unreleased” albums that somehow find their way on to the streets and in consumer’s hands. I imagine that the comics world is policed a lot tighter, but have there been any instances of titles that get released/bootlegged to the public that weren’t supposed to be?

In this digital era comics are indeed leaked. In fact I’ve got a friend who predominately downloads his comics. (And you allow this?! For shame, Mathan, for shame.) Just like you can find message boards with TV programs or movies to illegally download, you can usually find some threads devoted downloading comics.

Obviously these comics aren’t printed up and sold by street vendors (or in barbershops) (That’d be awesome though, wouldn’t it?) but the comics make it onto the computer screens of the fanboys who read them then post spoilers to infuriate other fanboys.

And it’s not like the comics wouldn’t have been released, the just hit a segment of the masses before they’re supposed to. But it’s not just limited to upcoming comics. If you want to check out Grant Morrison’s run on Batman I’m sure you’ll find it available for download somewhere. You’ve heard great things about the current Priest’s run on Black Panther search hard enough and I’m guessing you’ll find it.
It’s gotten so bad that DC and Marvel decided to team up to fight the problem. Read all about it here.

Personally I don’t think that piracy is that huge a deal. Reading a comic book isn’t like listening to music. Music has been moving toward a more portable form of entertainment for decades. Cassettes, the Walkman, the Discman and the iPod were all designed in an effort to make music a part of a person’s everyday routine. But since it’s strictly an auditory experience its delivery system isn’t that important; the number of people complaining about the lack of vitality found in the digital form is dwindling.

Comics on the other hand are visual and tactile. There’s a huge difference between reading an actual comic book and looking at the scans of a comic on a computer screen. Whether it’s the way the body is contorted or the positioning of the neck, it’s not the same thing. Plus for many comic readers it’s a matter of the routine. Going to pick up your comics, be it on a Wednesday when they’re released or when the weekend rolls around, is practically a ritual.

And honestly these leaked comics often generate buzz, especially the high profile issues. That buzz turns into internet chatter, which turns into people curious enough about what the fuss is about to pick the issue up.

Tim, I know you’ve got thoughts on the issue at hand.

I do, and they are mostly the same as yours. For the most part, I think that the effects of piracy are vastly overestimated in every industry. The music industry is taking its hits not because of piracy, but because the album format, for most kids today, is not the preferred way to get music and the big corporations haven’t quite figured out what to do with that. Movies continue to make more money than ever even as the industry is spending more than ever. And comics are doing better now then they were 10 or so years ago when there was no bootlegging going on. So, forgive me, but I don’t quite buy the hype.

Also, from a purely selfish standpoint, I like that there are whole issues out there that I can download. It makes this column easier because I can hunt up a greater variety of images. It makes research easier because I can read a comic I don’t own to answer a question. That said, I’d never not buy comic I enjoyed, even if I initially downloaded it, so I might not be the best judge of these things.

Neil uses the phrase “lock, stock, and 52 smoking universes” so, he’s got that going for him.

At this point, taking the good with the bad, should DC jump at the chance to reboot their entire universe, lock, stock, and 52 smoking universes with Final Crisis or do you think it’s better to just keep what we have, warts and all, and continue to fix, retcon, and tweak it as they go?

I guess I’m pretty ambivalent about this; I don’t hate things as they are now, but I wouldn’t give up comics if DC decided to do a complete reboot.

There’s really not too much that I’m 100% attached to. I think that the only thing that I’d miss if DC started the line again from day one would be Wally West as The Flash. I wouldn’t hate reading about a rookie Batman, Superman is guffed up enough that he could probably use a reboot and Wonder Woman could probably use some good hype around her title.

On the other hand, we’d probably lose the current Blue Beetle, Checkmate and Catwoman titles and I’ve grown rather fond of all three. But clearly you couldn’t have a third generation hero and a character with Selina’s rich history operating in a brand new universe.

Yet back on the first hand, if we go the whole “retcon along the way” route we run the risk of muddling continuity further. I’m pretty sure that was the tactic they took when it came to the Legion of Super-heroes post Crisis on Infinite Earths and that didn’t even last ten years before they started thing over. So maybe a hard reboot is the way to go.

But again on the second hand we’d lose tons of interesting characters who evolved into something more than they were when they were created. Look at the Calculator, Oracle, Nightwing and Dr. Light. Nuance isn’t something that’s generally found in a “new” universe.

Still, on the initial hand, if we reboot everything right away we wouldn’t need things like Birthright or the various Year One miniseries, because we’d be reading those books in the main titles.

However on that other hand, I’ve generally enjoyed every Year One miniseries that I’ve ever read. In fact most of them would end up on a list of trades that I’d recommend.

All that said, I don’t think that DC is going to be rebooting the universe anytime soon. They’ve invested too much in the current Year One miniseries (Metamorpho, Green Arrow, Teen Titans) to throw it away for a refined universe. And when you factor in high profile continuity porn like the “Superman & the Legion of Super-heroes” and “The Lighting Saga”, you see that DC is too invested in the past to throw it all away. Oh and one DC’s big things is legacy and it’s hard to have a credible legacy in a rebooted universe.

Tim, do you think that DC should abandon everything or soldier on?

Tweaks here and there are fine, but this whole “let’s just reset the whole damn thing” approach is just unnecessary. You know how long the DCU existed before Crisis on Infinite Earths? If you figure that 1938 and the first appearance of Superman is the birth of the DCU, it was 47 years. Infinite Crisis arrived 20 years later. And now, two years later, we’re considering another reboot? Really? There is nothing about continuity, in and of itself, that is hurting the DCU right now. The way they are treating it might be problematic, but the continuity itself is pretty alright. Let’s look for easier solutions before we go back to square one, shall we?

Well, that brings us to the end of the column.

Feel free to email me your questions and comments at mathan@4sternstaging.com or post them on our thread

Before I go, here’s my question to you this week what would it take for you to purchase DC’s next weekly title?

And an easy lyric, courtesy of me, “White Americans, what?/Nothing better to do?/Why don’t you kick yourself out?/You’re an immigrant, too”
