AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #584
Written by MARC GUGGENHEIM
Pencils & Cover by JOHN ROMITA JR.

CHARACTER ASSASSINATION BEGINS!
The climax to the last year’s worth of Spider-man stories starts with a bang as questions are answered and Spidey’s new world is rocked to its core.

Who’s the person terrorizing people as Menace? Who’s behind the Spider-Tracer Killings? Who’s going to be the Mayor of New York City? After more than 365 (Brand New) Days, Marc Guggenheim and John Romita Jr. have all the answers in the first chapter of “Character Assassination” — a story over a year in the making!

32 PGS./Rated A …$2.99

Grey: Character Assassination: Can there be any better title for Spider-Man these days?

Glazer: The title is great, yet the title itself doesn’t do a lot for me.  I, for one, grew up with a married Spider-man. The Brand New Day stuff has been fine, but its been “new stories with an old time feel.”  I got that the way I wanted from Ultimate Spidey and all this does is change the Spidey I grew up with to be a bad joke.  None of the cliffhangers constantly thrown at us have changed that, and I’ll certainly be skipping this book, where mysteries that don’t matter to me are resolved.

Logan: A year in the making, and nothing eye catching enough to make it worth coming back to for old fans? Well at least Romita Art is still good…

Proto: I still despise the very thought of a mainstream Spider-Man book because of this garbage.

CAPTAIN AMERICA #46
Written by ED BRUBAKER
Pencils & Cover by STEVE EPTING
70th Anniversary Variant Cover by MARKO DJURDJEVIC

Eisner-Winning artist Steve Epting returns as the New Captain America comes face-to-face with an old ally — Prince Namor — on a dangerous trip to China. Can Bucky and Namor team up to save the memory of an old comrade-in-arms as Cold War crimes come back to haunt the Winter Soldier? Part 1 (of 3).

32 PGS./Rated T+ …$2.99

Grey: Cap has been one of my favorite books since #1, hell, I wrote a column about it. It’s my honest belief that this creative team can do no wrong, and I’m VERY excited to see Bru play with Namor in his sandbox for a few issues. Easily one of the top five books Marvel puts out.
Logan: I keep hearing good things about the New Captain America, but still not enough reason to pick it up. Ah well, maybe someday.
Glazer: Namor is the most underutilized major Marvel character until very recently.  Know how we fix that? Stick him in Illuminati to give him a big time feel, then pass him off to Brubabker, the ebst writer at Marvel, to do a story based on his background.  Bucky Cap can currently do no wrong and though I’d like a story not baed upon his past at some point soon, adding in Namor more than makes up for that.
Proto: This could definitely prove to be interesting. I haven’t picked up any of the new Cap, but I’ve heard nothing but good things.
X-MEN VS. HULK #1
Written by CHRIS CLAREMONT
Penciled by SCOTT CLARK
Cover by DAVID YARDIN

You’re Colossus, the steel-skinned X-Man who can dish out some serious hurt. So when Wolverine wants to take you down a peg or two, who’s he gonna call? If you’re thinking mean and green, you’re on the right track…

Join X-Legend Chris Claremont for a tutorial in pain you won’t forget! Plus: a classic Claremont tale!

48 pgs/One-Shot/Rated A …$3.99

Grey: …….why?
Logan: Hey finally another crossover that will be quickly forgeten….hurray? Wait, don’t Wolverine, and Hulk hate each other…whoops. Too bad Wolverine isn’t friends with any Avengers…whoops. Okay how about someone Anti-Russian…ah right…Canadian Secret Serivice…nevermind. Seriously the guy has better contacts then Hulk that make more sense.
Glazer: Wait… Colosus, the tragic Russian artist, needs to be taken down a peg?  And Wolverine decides to do it… and not himself… so he calls his enemy with the screwed up recent story the Hulk.  Retire Claremont. Youre finding new ways to tarnish your legacy.
Grey: Chris Claremont: When writers need to admit they should just be editors
Glazer: Xmen should rehire lobdell. He’s underrated
Proto: …no… just no…
PUNISHER #1
Written by RICK REMENDER
Penciled by JEROME OPENA
50/50 Covers by MIKE MCKONE

“LIVING IN DARKNESS,” Part 1
The fight against the “Dark Reign” begins as the duty of chronicling Frank Castle’s war journal is passed to new regular team of writer Rick Remender (End League

, Fear Agent) and Jerome Opeña (Fear Agent, Wolverine).

One man with one bullet, in the right place, at the right time, can change the world. That’s why the Punisher is perched atop a building on the Jersey shore with a high-powered Skrull rifle, his crosshairs trained on a target in Midtown Manhattan. But who is his target — and why? One thing’s for sure: They’re anything but helpless. Someone is watching their back. Someone big. Enter: The Sentry!

48 PGS./Rated T+ …$3.99

Grey: So they cancelled War Journal as Fraction left the book, did the Ennis/Dillon mini, and now they’re relaunching the book? Why? Did Frank return to his 1995 levels of popularity and nobody told me? I like Punisher as much as the next guy, but they need to brand him, not keep trying to reboot different versions of him across the universe
Glazer: This could mean less to me, but I’m not sure how.  Punisher has a niche, between classic “kill villians” stories (as a supporting character while other heroes try to bring him in) or as the dark comedy Ennis leading man.  Nothing else works long term and pairing him with the woefully miscast Sentry surely won’t help.
Logan: *Yawn* They finally give him Alien Weaponry, and his biggest fish to fry is the Sentry?
Proto: Yeah… I don’t see this ending well at all. It’s just another Punisher book that they’re going to waste. This could mean less to me, but I’m not sure how.  Punisher has a niche, between classic “kill villians” stories (as a supporting character while other heroes try to bring him in) or as the dark comedy Ennis leading man.  Nothing else works long term and pairing him with the woefully miscast Sentry surely won’t help.

THOR #600
Written by J. MICHAEL STRACZYNSKI, STAN LEE & CHRIS GIARRUSSO
Penciled by OLIVIER COIPEL, CHRIS GIARRUSSO & TBA
Wraparound Cover by OLIVIER COIPEL
Variant Wraparound Cover by MARKO DJURDJEVIC
Variant Cover by MARC SILVESTRI

The mighty God of Thunder hits a major milestone! Thor

goes back to its classic numbering for this issue #600 mega-event, and even Stan “The Man” Lee joins the party with an all-new story! J. Michael Straczynski and Olivier Coipel bring their widely acclaimed run to a major culmination! And Chris Giarrusso lays down an epic Mini Marvels Thor adventure!

PLUS jaw-dropping wraparound covers by Olivier Coipel and Marko Djurdjevic! Miss this issue?! We say thee NAY!

104 PGS./Rated T+ …$4.99

Logan: Unsure how to take this. JMS is someone I’d rather not see bogged down with big name characters, but as long as there isn’t an editor looking over his shoulder, and rewriting his work after he turns it in, it should be fine. As for Stan…did they turn him down for Spider-man?

Grey: I like the returning of books to their rightful numberings, and Thor is no exception. Not to mention that it’s been one of the better books published by Marvel over the past few years. The preview might not tell us much, but this being JMS’s Thor, we know that we can expect a well crafted story that will hopefully be extra sized, instead of over padded with back up features
Glazer: I… need to get this in trade. I read a few issues and just not enough was happening to justify monthly purchases.  I really dig the direction from what I’ve seen and this is just the perfect book for JMS.  Hopefully this isn’t a sign that the book is dropping off or a return to the pre-Ragnarok status quo.  Stan Lee writing a backup, with all due respect, means less than were it Simonson.
Grey: I liked the pre-Ragnarok status quo <_<
Glazer: Me too, but I don’t need it back yet. Let this run for awhile more. In a few years returning to that status quo will mean so much more.
Proto: This has be extremely excited. I’ve been very pleased with Thor recently and as a big JMS fan, this is something that I’ll probably be picking up.
SECRET INVASION: WAR OF KINGS
Written by DAN ABNETT & ANDY LANNING
Penciled by PAUL PELLETIER & BONG DAZO
Cover by BRANDON PETERSON

It’s finally here… WAR OF KINGS! The Secret Invasion may be over, but the Inhumans are still reeling from the terrible wounds inflicted on them by the Skrulls. And this time, the Royal Family and their massively powered people have been pushed too far! You have never seen the Inhumans like this – and it’s only the beginning! Plus: How will the empire-expanding Vulcan react to these recent universe-shaking developments? Before this double-sized shocker is over, vengeance will be had, daring alliances will be forged, and the first shots in a destiny-changing battle will be fired! The acclaimed team of writers Dan Abnett & Andy Lanning (Annihilation: Conquest, Nova) and artist Paul Pelletier (Guardians of the Galaxy) unite to revamp heroes, reveal villains and rock the universe!

48 PGS./One-Shot/Rated T+ …$3.99

Grey: I couldn’t have cared less about this book until I saw the creative team, DnA can honestly do no wrong, especially lately, Nova is an amazing title, easily among the best that Marvel produces, and them handling this sort of event insires confidence from me. Plus, it has an artist named Bong, how fucking awesome is that?
Glazer: Oh my god. I literally was rolling my eyes at this until I saw the names Abnett and Lanning. That promises Guardians of the Galaxy and Nova… just like the Annihilation events, except with SI tacked on to increase sales.  This, I can live with.  I dislike the Inhumans, but Abnett and Lanning have earned my money to try and change my mind.
Logan: Had to glance at the title again to make sure it wasn’t a George RR Martin book. Which would’ve been wishful thinking. Actually sounds interesting.
Proto: Ooooo! I hadn’t heard about this. With a team like that behind the wheel I might pick it up.
NOVA #21
Written by DAN ABNETT & ANDY LANNING
Penciled by WELLINTON ALVES
Cover by ADI GRANOV

Richard Rider: Nova no more? With the new Nova Corps on Earth laying down the law, is there no longer a need for the Human Rocket? Plus: guest-stars Darkhawk and the original Quasar! Dan Abnett, Andy Lanning and Wellinton Alves hit you with the biggest twists yet in the latest jaw-dropping installment of what

Wizard calls “the best outer space soap opera since Star Wars!”

32 PGS./Rated T+ …$2.99

Logan: Nova Corps on Earth? Reminds of the GL fallout of the 80s, and early 90s. Both lead to cool stories, and Ryder is practically Marvel’s Hal. Sounds interesting.

Grey: Speaking of DnA, you can’t talk about them and not bring up Nova, which has been one of the best books put out by any company the past year and a half. It’s got smart writing, and a respect for everything to come before, and hell, it’s got Darkhawk and Quasar in it!
Glazer: I’m going to go ahead and guess that Nova will keep doing what he’s doing since he’s the most relevant now he’s ever been. I’ve never liked anyone named Quasar, but this one is still far superior to the current, obnoxious Phyla Vell.  Darkhawk is always good. I read this in trade, but there no way to go wrong just by reading it.
Grey: You know what this book needs? Genis Vell. Not to knock on Phyla, but Genis is by far THE best cosmic character Marvel has had in the past 10 years, and he was chewed up and shat out like he was nothing
Glazer: I… never read much Genis.  Recommend me some stuff.
Grey: the entire Peter David run
Proto: What Grey said.

NEW WARRIORS #20
Written by KEVIN GREVIOUX
Penciled by REILLY BROWN
Cover by NIC KLEIN

FINAL ISSUE!
This is it. This is what it’s all led up to. In a future that’s everything he’s ever fought against, Night Thrasher has achieved his mission and been reunited with his brother, Dwayne. But at a cost. One that’s growing. And when that cost becomes too high, Donyell realizes he needs to take it upon himself to set things right. In this final issue of New Warriors

, all bets are off. And no one leaves unscathed…

48 PGS./Rated T+ …$3.99

Grey: Get out the party shakers, it’s finally over! CELEBRATION!
Logan: And the fat lady finally sings. Hopefully the decent characters move on to Inititive, Heroes for Hire, or something.
Glazer: Err, I didn’t realize this book was actually being published.  Oh well, next.
Proto: I REALLY liked this to start… then… yeah…
Grey: Bad Proto!

RUINS #1
Written by WARREN ELLIS
Painted by CLIFF NIELSEN, TERESE NIELSEN & CHRIS MOELLER
Cover by CLIFF & TERESE NIELSEN
LOGO VARIANT ALSO AVAILABLE!

Marvel’s favorite pessimist looks through his darkest glass yet into a world where “marvel” is just another word for “horror.” Nuclear warfare, internment camps, government oppression, drug addiction, degradation, suicide… and those are just the ones we have words for. Have the men and women we know as heroes made the situation better or worse? Here’s a hint: In the Ruins, radiation only kills. Collecting Ruins #1-2

.

80 PGS./One-Shot/Parental Advisory …$4.99

Grey: I bootlegged this a few years ago and found it to be an incredibly compelling take on the Marvel universe, and I’ve been looking forward to the option of having a legitimate copy of it for years. If you’ve never heard of it, trust me, buy it, very intriguing story.
Glazer: Ellis being all dark for a huge one shot. I’m there.  I mean, I’m sure radioactive cell phones built into peoples bodies will play a huge role, but the story itself is still bound to be good.
Grey: Bound to be? It’s a reprint! I can already tell you it’s good ;-)
Glazer: Haha well, I didn’t read it, so for the 90% of us that’s true of! =P
Grey: hahahaha
Glazer: I’m a huge Ellis fan
Grey: this is like the unofficial Ellis sequel to Marvels
Glazer: Sweet, I liked but didn’t love Marvels
Grey: same, Ruins is a VERY different sort of animal, the only similarity is the POV character, other then that…..yeah, Ruins is what Ellis believes would have actually happened so lots of deformity and death.
Grey: Sweet
Glazer: And cell phones. Many cell phones
Grey: No cell phones, this was 1996
Glazer: Wow, before the blackberry rocked ellis’s world
Logan: This has to be one of my favorite comics when I was a Teenager. Between that, and the Last Avengers story we saw something we rarely see in comics, the good guys loose something important. I’m a little upset shuffling through my box, and not finding it. Somewhere between the art, and the special cover it just spoke to me. Might make this a must buy.
Proto: I’ve wanted to read this for the longest time, but never got around to pirating it. I think I might buy this.Wow, before the blackberry rocked ellis’s world

X-MEN/SPIDER-MAN #3 (of 4)
Written by CHRISTOS N. GAGE
Pencils & Cover by MARIO ALBERTI

We take you back to the days of grungy 90s as The X-Men and Spider-Man face off against Mr. Sinister and Carnage! But this Spidey isn’t Peter Parker–it’s Ben Reilly, the Spider-Clone! And Wolverine’s claws are made of bone, not adamantium! It’s radical… it’s extreme… and if we coulda put a chromium cover on it, we would have! Put down your pogs and pick this up if only to feast your eyes on Mario Alberti’s art! It’ll make you say “Cowabunga, dude!”

32 PGS./Rated A …$3.99

Grey: Ben Reilly? Sold.
Glazer: Gage…. one of the best writers around takes on the most creatively questionable content with astonishing regularity.  I hate Sinister and Carnage so I can’t concionably (sp?) reccomend this, even with Ben Reilly.  If it did well, some might think Reilly would return, but more likely Marvel would revive Carnage.
Logan: As much as I like Ben Reilly…Sinister, and Carnage is a horrible combo.
Proto: Ben Reilly is going to make me HAVE to buy this isn’t he?

KICK-ASS #7
Written by MARK MILLAR
Pencils & Cover by JOHN ROMITA JR.

SOON TO BE A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE! Dave Lizewski has had better days. When he first pulled on the Super Hero suit, it was the thrill of a lifetime. Since then, he’s been banged-up, beaten, broken, bludgeoned, and all sorts of other b-words. He’s met a 9-year-old assassin and been on a super hero team-up. He’s watched people die and seen himself become an internet celebrity. But all that means nothing—compared to tonight. MARK MILLAR and JOHN ROMITA JR.’s foul-mouthed super hero saga continues!

32 PGS./Mature …$2.99

Grey: The premise of the book has so much that could be wrong that if it were any creative team other then Millar and JRJr I would have no faith in it. That said, I love this book to no end, and am glad it’s not ending at 6 like I’d heard rumored
Glazer: Generally speaking, Millar writes caricatures, not characters.  He seems to spend more time going “aren’t I cool?” to readers than making them care.  In a book called “Kick Ass”, well… if you’re in the mood for a fun, but sardonic romp, go for yours.
Logan: Am I the only one that sees that title, and thinks,”Hey, Kool-Aid!” Yeah, gotta enjoy Mark Millars’ works.
Proto: Honestly, never heard of it.
Grey: Bad Proto!
X-MEN: LEGACY #220
Written by MIKE CAREY
Penciled by SCOT EATON
Cover by LEE BERMEJO

“SALVAGE”
It’s the moment that X-Fans have been waiting for — Rogue makes her return to the X-Books. But while Xavier seeks out Rogue, who is searching for him? Hunter becomes hunted and friend becomes foe, in a story that will change your favorite Southern Belle forever. Part 1 (of 5).

32 PGS./Rated A …$2.99

Grey: I’m an X-Fan, and I have not been waiting for her return in the least bit
Glazer: I’m an X-Fan and this is a moment I’m dreading. Rogue was a fine, angsty support character, but too much Claremont has left her a complete mess.  But no worries, she’s about to be changed forever… AGAIN.
Logan: Rogue…okay, she’s cool, but you’ll change her, drop her into obscurity, and then do the same thing in a few more years. Can Legacy actually be about…the X-men dying, and new members taking over in the memory of the old? No? Good. Because we don’t want people stealing good ideas.
Proto: I have been kind of curious when she’d be back, but I wouldn’t say I’ve been waiting for it.

FACES OF EVIL: GRUNDY #1
Written by Scott Kolins & Geoff Johns
Art by Kolins
Cover by Shane Davis & Sandra Hope

The marsh monster stars in his first solo book ever! Who was the man who would be reborn as Solomon Grundy? Discover the secret history of the creature as his curse is explored and redefined in this one-shot special!

On sale January 7 • 32 pg, one shot, FC, $2.99 US

Grey: Geoff Johns and Scott Kolins are guarunteed gold together, and the one shot about Grundy just adds to it. I’m predicting Blackest Night crossing over into this book
Glazer: Noooo don’t reveal Grundy!  The charming and constantly changing Grundy needs no backstory.  He’s an unrequited dead mess who hits hard. Leave well enough alone.
Grey: But it’s Johns and Kolins! That means this should be the best Grundy since Robinson’s Starman!
Glazer: I’m sure it’ll be good, but its still answering a question no one was asking.
Logan: I’m about to the point where I think we should change the logo from DC to GJ. He’s been doing more work providing the backbone of the DC Universe then most editors would let most writers, and it’s been consistently good. Yes, I said Titans was good, even if out of character. Which definately makes for a more consistent universe.

FINAL CRISIS #7

On sale January 28 • 7 of 7 • 40 pg, FC, $3.99 US • FINAL ISSUE

Logan: Grant Morrison…Let’s just move on. I find it easier to ignore his work. Burn me once, burn me twice, burn me no more.

Grey: Doug Mahnke is the artist here? What the hell happened?
Glazer: I always worry about Grant for huge events.  He can be brilliant, or brilliantly obtuse.  Let’s see which Final Crisis is.
Grey: I’m slightly baffled by the knowledge that come issue 7 it’s going to be tieing in the multiverse when after 4 issues so far, there’s been virtually no use or mention of it
Glazer” Well, I suppose that’d be what that “circuit” is.  And since all the DCU heroes will fall, good guys need to come from somewhere
Grey: Wildstorm FTW
Glazer: JSA alone feels like a better event comic than all final crisis.
Grey: all JSA needs is a new cover artist
Glazer: Heh, as a wrestling fan I find it neccessary to separate an artist from their art. Most wrestlers are utter scumbags.
Grey: yeah yeah, at least HHH knows how to put over young talent from time to time; Alex Ross refuses to admit that Hulk Hogan isn’t 30 anymore
Glazer: No… I mean in their personal lives
Grey:I know, I just need to rag on his silver age booking
Glazer: I know a former booking comittee guy for wwe and a guy who lived with jacobs (of roh) so… yeah… pricks almost all.
Proto: I haven’t been following Final Crisi at all, if I hear good things, I’ll get the trade.

TERROR TITANS #4
Written by Sean McKeever
Art and cover by Joe Bennett & Jack Jadson

The hidden champion of the Dark Side club is revealed – Milestone’s own Static, in his shocking introduction to the modern DC Universe! On sale January 7 • 4 of 6 • 32 pg, FC, $2.99 US

Grey: STATIC! this almost makes me want to buy the issue, but then I realize that it’s still McKeever and I remember to know better
Glazer: Static is pretty awesome, but McKeever needs to not get work anymore.
Logan: Welcome back Static…just hope it isn’t your last showing. Though I hope your creator is looking for you, and takes notice.
Proto: I… almost want this…

TANGENT COMICS: SUPERMAN’S REIGN #11
Written by Dan Jurgens & Ron Marz
Art by Carlos Magno & Julio Ferreira and Andie Tong & Mark McKenna
Cover by Ivan Reis & Joe Prado

In this penultimate issue, the Justice League of America is defeated as Tangent Superman has conquered the DC Universe by setting the Ultra-Humanite loose on the populace. Is anyone left to challenge the Tangent Man of Telekinesis? Or has the mad dictator truly won?

On sale January 21 • 11 of 12 • 32 pg, FC, $2.99 US

Logan: At least Ron Marz is still finding work. Tangent was interesting, and different universe to visit, and while I like the variety…more Supermen is never the answer.

Grey: I’ve actually been reading this, and I believe that this marks the fourth different art team in 11 issues
Glazer: Tangent Tangent Tangent Tangent Tangent. Do we get that this is a Tangent story yet? Unless you’re already reading this, it can be safely ignored.
Grey: And even if you are reading it, it can still be safely ignored
Proto: Penultimate is a big word.

On sale January 21 • 40 pg, FC, $3.99 US

Grey: Tomasi and Adam Kubert? I don’t care what the book is, that’s a sell right there.
Logan: Never before seen contridicts important to the Batman Mythos. I can understand hyping a new character, but after a certain point it get’s old. Batman has so many characters feeding off his name at this point it’s a joke.
Glazer: So… with Batman gone… we’re back to just the Outsiders, which was a damn fine book before Batman was added to ruin it.  Lets see what this new direction can do.
Grey: hopefully Tomasi will be writing it full time, as he has the Midas Touch
Glazer: Does he? What’s he write?
Grey: GLC and Nightwing
Glazer: I don’t read Nightwing, the one year later stuff made me drop it.
Grey: It’s better now, but here’s the real question……when the fuck is one of the Kuberts going to actually do something?

GREEN LANTERN CORPS #32
Written by Peter J. Tomasi
Art by Patrick Gleason & Rebecca Buchman
Cover by Gleason & Sandra Hope

Plus, Mongul begins his conquest of a world and a takeover of the Sinestro Corps. What world is at stake and which Lanterns will attempt to stand in his murderous way?

On sale January 14 • 32 pg, FC, $2.99 US

Grey: God I love this book, seriously, it’s a monthly dose of fun and Guy Gardner
Glazer: Mongul is awesome and offers a new direction for the Corps.  Krib is legitimately creepy as all shit, so I’m amped to see his reign of terror continue…. and Kyle is still my favorite GL, so that should be awesome as well.  I even really enjoy Star Sapphire. This book is perfect for me!
Proto: Must… get… caught… up…

MANHUNTER #38
Written by Marc Andreyko
Art by Michael Gaydos
Cover by Brad Walker & Livesay

On sale January 14 • 32 pg, FC, $2.99 US • FINAL ISSUE

Grey: Cancelled again? Fucking hell, did DC even try and market this book? I know I was buying it, but I can’t remember seeing a single ad for this amazing title
Glazer: This isn’t a book I enjoy, but I’m sad to see it go. These niche titles many enjoy need more love. Hopefully my beloved Blue Beetle isn’t next on the chopping block.
Grey: Spider-Girl, Manhunter, yep, Beetle is next; the little books that could need saving now more then ever
Glazer: Sad.
Logan: Damn, another great title dies, and no Beetle must live! This I command!

FACES OF EVIL: KOBRA #1
Written by Ivan Brandon
Art by Jesus Meriño
Cover by Andrew Robinson

Who is Kobra? After his death, Kobra’s terrorist organization has been in disarray, with different factions and false leaders vying for control. Now a new figure has infiltrated the Kobra Cult and started systematically destroying its powerbase. But who is this new player? Is it the original Kobra reborn – or something far more sinister?

On sale January 28 • 32 pg, one shot, FC, $2.99 US

Grey: One question: Who the hell is this writer?
Glazer: Who and What?  Just buy GI JOE!  Give me Cobra Commander.  Forget your Kobra!
Grey: Dude, no way, Kobra is awesome. Waid used them in Flash, and then Johns used him in JSA, where Atom Smasher crushed him and Black Adam ripped his heart out. And then check out what they did with it in Checkmate………my bad sense is tingling
Glazer: I recall, they’re generic. Call em Kobra or AIM or Hydra; same shit.
Grey: Kobra had the benefit of having a cool leader before Teth de-hearted him

SECRET SIX #5
Written by Gail Simone
Art by Nicola Scott & Doug Hazlewood
Cover by Andrew Robinson

A “Faces of Evil” issue! The tattered remnants of the Six continue their run through the gauntlet of DCU heroes and villains on their race to get their precious (and deadly) cargo to Gotham City. The secret of the mysterious Junior is revealed, and a betrayal from within may spell death for the rest of the team! Also, has a former member returned?

On sale January 7 • 32 pg, FC, $2.99 US

Grey: Mad Hatter! Shot calling that right now.
Glazer: Mad Hatter, about fucking time!  We already got the return of (name insert, the poison chick) so he’s all that makes real sense.  This book is consistently great.  Get the old trades. Get this.  You’ll love it.  IT makes freaking Catman awesome.
Grey: Catman makes Catman awesome
Glazer: He was so c list
Grey: Alright, Simone made Catman awesome, just like she does with so many other thingsI’m standing by Mad Hatter, though there is one other possibility: Harley Quinn. She was on the team during their Birds of Prey appearance
Glazer: That’d be dissapointing I like the char but its too minor
Logan: I’ve enjoyed Gail Simone, and her work with this team book. I can see no wrong.
Proto: Jeez… another book that I HAVE to get caught up on.

DETECTIVE COMICS #852
Written by Paul Dini

Grey: Two parter by Dini as the DC solits continue to do an amazing job of not giving us any sort of clue where the Batman franchise is heading
Logan: I really hope they make her evil again. Evil Catwoman just kicks ass.
Glazer: Dini is great.  This will be great, but part of me prefered his awesome single issue full stories since those were so rare back then.  What the hell happens to the Bat!>
Grey: I don’t mind doing story arcs, as it does add a lot more room for the story to develop, that said, is it scary that I’m actually liking Hush as a villain?
Glazer: He was a good idea, but Loeb has no idea how to finish an arc and ruined him for a bit.  Should you be surprised Dini saved a good idea gone bad?
Grey: True enough, though I was bashing AJ Lieberman more for his run on Gotham Knights, where he tried to use Hush and created a royal cluster fuck of shit. Like the Clayface virus
Glazer: oy
Proto: ….why are none of the Batman books mentioning Batman? Did I miss something important? God I need to get back into comics hardcore again.
Grey: so what the hell is going to happen to Bruce?
Glazer: No idea. It’s Grant.  Guessing would be futile.  I mean, you did read Invisibles, right?
Grey: Unfortunately no, been meaning to
Glazer: wow…. smoke up first
Grey: you know it
THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD #21
Written by David Hine
Art by Doug Braithwaite & Bill Reinhold
Cover by Braithwaite

It’s Lantern vs. Lantern as Hal Jordan comes to blows with his bizarre alien counterpart! Back on Earth, Green Arrow struggles to save the children of Arcadia Orphanage from further horrific experimentation!

On sale January 21 • 32 pg, FC, $2.99 US

Grey: Hal comes against his bizarre alien counterpart who happens to be a lantern? That has NEVER been done before! I mean, shit, did you know that there were other Lanterns? Or that some were ALIENS?!
Glazer:Man, that solicit sounds mighty shitty.  Alien lanterns mean nothing.  Give me different colored lanterns?  And in Brave and Bold I need more than two semi-linked stories.  Let’s just move on.
Logan: Well at least there is a fight.

GREEN LANTERN #38
Written by Geoff Johns
Art by Ivan Reis & Oclair Albert
Cover by Shane Davis & John Dell

A “Faces of Evil” issue! The War of Light ignites as the first bizarre battle with the Red Lanterns comes to a blood-fueled conclusion. But what unexpected fate has befallen Atrocitus, the leader of the Red Lanterns, and what new Green Lantern law is unveiled?

Plus, the Guardians of the Orange Light reveal themselves!

On sale January 28 • 32 pg, FC, $2.99 US

Grey: Now this is what Green Lantern should be. I think the Orange Lanterns are going to be one guy, impowered by the Controllers
Glazer: This story can’t be cooler.  Between this and Annihilation fallout over at Marvel, the space heroes are where it’s at for both big companies.  Get in on this now before you need to wait a year for a trade!
Grey: Or, do what I do, buy all the singles then get it all in hardcover. But what could the new law be?!
Glazer: not a clue
Logan: More laws? Interesting. Wonder if Harvey Birdman needs a job…

Grey:: This is what I hate the absolute most about events, they don’t even try and give us clever hints anymore, they just give us blank solits with no covers.
Glazer: Whoa! That’s pretty lame, What I buy will depend on the teams. I really want Grant Morrison to write Sentry
Logan: Ugh…team shakeups…
Grey: I really want to read previews
Glazer: go yell at marvel
Grey: FUCK YOU MARVEL!
Proto: Bad Marvel! BAD!

SPIDER-MAN NOIR #2 (of 4)
Written by DAVID HINE & FABRICE SAPOLSKY
Penciled by CARMINE DI GIANDOMENICO
Cover by PATRICK ZIRCHER
Variant Cover by DENNIS CALERO

With great power, come great responsibility… and a leather overcoat, and a revolver. It’s Spider-Man as you’ve never seen him before! Writers David Hine and Fabrice Sapolsky and artist Carmine Di Giandomenico descend into the seamy, trash-strewn underbelly of Depression-era New York, and soar to the bloated heights of corruption and greed, to tell the unfamiliar story of Peter Parker, a conscientious but powerless young man given the ability to take on the Goblin’s mob! Will the crusading photojournalist Ben Urich and the slinky femme fatale Felicia Hardy help him… or stick a knife in his back?

32 PGS./Rated T+ …$3.99

Grey: Whoever concepted this idea should be shot
Logan: You know, I was thinking about this idea the other day. Didn’t even know they were doing it. Might be a fun read.
Proto: What a terrible idea! coughI’mgonnagetitcough
Glazer: So, it’s Gotham Under Gaslight, the Spider-Man edition.  Let’s just pretend it doesn’t exist, shall we?

X-MEN NOIR #2 (of 4)
Written by FRED VAN LENTE
Pencils & Cover by DENNIS CALERO
Variant Cover by DENNIS CALERO

“Chief Detective Magnus had never seen Sebastian Shaw so angry before. The vein pulsating in the man’s forehead threatened to burst as he swept one arm around what remained of his looted Hellfire Club.

“‘Look at this!’ Shaw seethed. ‘Just look! They stole everything that wasn’t nailed down — and then they took the nails out of the rest of it and stole that, too!

“‘If you can’t catch these ‘X Men,’ Eric, I can just as easily shift my… support to someone who will…”

32 PGS./Parental Advisory …$3.99

Logan: Okay…bored now…

Glazer: Right, Gotham by Gaslight, X-Men edition.  Let’s just pretend this doesn’t exist, shall we?
Grey: Just remember, Marvel releases a Noir line while cancelling Spider-Girl
Proto: *Whistles innocently*

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #583
Written by MARK WAID
Pencils by BARRY KITSON
Cover by JOHN ROMITA SR.

YOU ASKED FOR IT, YOU GOT IT! PETER PARKER ON A DATE!
After the revelations of “Mind on Fire,” love is in the air for more than one member of the cast and Pete finally gets some time out with the ladies. (and who better to bring it to you than two men who both had dates as recently as 1987!)

Amidst the romance though, forces are gathering that will spell trouble for Peter in the months to come.

32 PGS./Rated A …$2.99

Grey: I didn’t ask for it. Did you ask for it?
Glazer: I asked for Peter Parker to be married.  Why can’t Pete have problems and be married?  Shit, I know plenty of people married with problems.  Peter on dates is the anti-good.  It’s actually the fullfillment of all of Darkseid’s evil anti-life plans.
Logan: Oh sweet Marvel is taking requests. Okay, I’ll take a Cardiac spin-off book written by Millar, or Moore. What do you mean you’re going to put me on hold? Hey! Hanging up on me isn’t hold…
Grey: Apparently being married is for old people. My 24 year old best friend has a 6 month old son
Glazer: really? My best friend when I was 17 had a kid.
Grey: my friend Spike got married at 23, actually, a lot of people I know are getting married
Glazer: i had a few friends get married around 19
Grey: My friend Amanda is 23 with 2 kids. You know what’s funny though?
Glazer: What?
Grey: All of these people are so much more relatable then whoever the hell is the main character in the Spider-titles. I don’t recognize Spidey anymore, he’s the way a 40 year old envisions life at 25, as opposed to how someone at 25 actually is
Glazer: agreed there
Proto: STUPID BRAND NEW DAY!

IMMORTAL IRON FIST #22
Written by DUANE SWIERCZYNSKI
Penciled by TRAVEL FOREMAN
Cover by PATRICK ZIRCHER

Iron Fist and the Immortal Weapons kick off another dimension-spanning adventure! Think you know everything there is to know about the Seven Capital Cities of Heaven? Well, maybe you do. But a couple of arcs ago we did tease there being an EIGHTH city… oh that’s right… Duane Swierczynski and Travel Foreman are taking it there!

32 PGS./Rated T+ …$2.99

Grey: this book misses Bru and Frac, not as much as it could, but it really does
Glazer: You know, I read this in trade, but everything I hear, this is well and good.
Grey: I might not be able to spell or pronounce his name, but Swierczynski is doing a good job here
Logan: Yes. Kung Fu: The Legend Continues…keep kicking ass Danny.

CABLE #10
Written by DUANE SWIERCZYNSKI
Pencils & Cover by ARIEL OLIVETTI

“WAITING FOR THE END OF THE WORLD,” CONCLUSION
In the present, Cyclops, Emma and Beast have been ambushed by Bishop and a nasty little surprise he’s smuggled into the X-Men HQ. Meanwhile, hundreds of years in the future, Cable realizes what the former X-Man has done to the planet — all in an effort to make sure Cable and the four-year-old mutant messiah never, ever return to the present. Once again, the rules of the hunt have been completely rewritten, and the future of mutantkind has never looked more uncertain.

32 PGS./Rated T+ …$2.99

Grey: Iron Fist makes me want to give the guy more of a chance then this book does, as I like Cable, but it still hasn’t gripped me yet
Glazer: This book is moving too slowly.  At least we’re finally done with this arc.  Maybe we’ll get a better pace for the next one.  I’m a cable fan and that’s all that’s keeping me reading.
Grey: one thing that bugs me is that by this issue the baby is going to be four years old and still doesn’t have a name other then “Little Girl”
Glazer: i got an awesome nova heroclick! And … I just want a new story
Logan: Time travel…I really am a time travel fan, but comics, and time travel are just a head ache waiting to happen. Too many chiefs, writers, editers, artists, moms, dads, moms that will be dads, and fathers who are there own daughters to really take a comic book story that will be wiped from continuity less then two years later.
Proto: ….I think I missed 4 years somewhere.
A lifelong reader and self proclaimed continuity guru, Grey is the Editor in Chief of Comics Nexus. Known for his love of Booster Gold, Spider-Girl (the real one), Stephanie Brown, and The Boys. Don't miss The Gold Standard.
