Candy Land From Board To Screen?

Disc Announcements, News

In what is sure to be sweeter than anything available at the concessions stand, Universal Pictures is making film based on the Hasbro boardgame, Candy Land.

The studio has set Etan Cohen to write and Kevin Lima to direct a live-action feature based on the game that sends players round a colorful board littered with such tantalizing locations such as the Candy Cane Forest and Gum Drop Mountain.

The project is the first film to emerge from the deal Universal made last February with Hasbro, whose properties are the basis for the summer films G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.

The kid orientated board game isn’t as obvious an inspiration for a movie project as those other Hasbro brands, but the studio has tapped talent adept at comedy and family fare.

Lima most recently directed the Amy Adams film Enchanted as well as the animated features Tarzan and 102 Dalmatians. Cohen’s recent script work includes Tropic Thunder and Madagascar 2, and he most recently rewrote The Fiance, a romantic comedy that will star Anne Hathaway.

Other board games that Universal has planned to bring to the Big Screen include: Monopoly, Clue, Ouija, and Battleship. They also own the rights to the Hasbro properties Magic, The Gathering and Stretch Armstrong.
