Director Robert Rodriguez has set his sights on his next film, the futuristic thriller Nerveracker.

The jack-of-all-trades auteur will write and direct the film, which already has a release date of April 16, 2010.

Set in 2085, the story centers on a character named Joe Tezca who is part of an elite unit dispatched to quell a crime wave in a theoretically perfect future society.

Rodriguez who manages to bounce back and forth between R rated action flair and kids films seemingly with ease is currently finishing up one of the later with Shorts, about a young boy’s discovery of a colorful, wish-granting rock which causes chaos in the suburban town of Black Falls when jealous kids and scheming adults alike set out to get their hands on it. That film is due out later this year.

Fans are still waiting with eager anticipation for the first of two promised Sin City sequels or a full length Machete film for which Rodriguez made a trailer as part of the Grindhouse double feature. He is also rumored to be working on a live action Jetsons film.
