Fox Searchlight Pictures has released the trailer and teaser poster for The Way, Way Back, starring Steve Carell, Toni Collette, Allison Janney, AnnaSophia Robb, Sam Rockwell, Maya Rudolph, Amanda Peet, Rob Corddry and Liam James.
Some may recall that this film caused quite the bidding war during the Sundance Film Festival. Searchlight paid a reported $10 million for the rights to distribute. That’s quite a large sum, but not at all surprising. The indie arm of 20th Century Fox has a history of taking small comedies with strong ensembles (Juno, Little Miss Sunshine) and having them become gigantic hits.
Nat Faxon and Jim Rash, who picked up Academy Awards (along with Alexander Payne) for The Descendants, write and direct this coming of age story of 14-year-old (Liam James) who is vacationing with his mother, Pam (Toni Collette), her overbearing boyfriend, Trent (Steve Carell), and his daughter, Steph (Zoe Levin). Duncan the introvert, not having fun or fitting in during the summer vacation, finds an unexpected friend in Owen (Sam Rockwell), manager of the Water Wizz water park. With Owen’s urging Duncan starts to come out of his shell to enjoy a summer he’ll never forget.
The Way, Way Back opens in theaters on July 5, 2013.
