Last season’s NCIS finale was used primarily to tie up loose ends as Ziva was written out, Bishop was written in, the seeds were sewn for a spin-off and Ralph Waite’s death was explained. As a result, the show didn’t really finish with the kind of finale that its fans have come to expect.
Showrunner Gary Glasberg says that the premiere will be quite different. In an interview with TVLine, Glasberg says that the Sept. 23 was designed to be the opposite and as shocking as possible.
“We’ve got a really significant season opener that brings Gibbs and McGee to Russia for a really big story. A crisis comes up and we immediately launch with a significant adversary who will pop up throughout the rest of the season,” he said.
