The Weekly Pulse: TV's Second Wife

Archive

Welcome back. I am here once again to get you caught up on the week that was here on Pulse TV. I do this, so you can get ready for the next week and the next week. Because we don’t stop around here. We are just like that Energizer Bunny. We keep going and going and going and going…

Some may argue..why read this column..when loyal readers read what everyone else has to say when they post it? True. But I know there are some lazy people out there, who may not read everything. But they may be missing some good stuff. Therefore, I read everything and tell you that you HAVE to read it too. You can call me the “in-between” man. If you still think you don’t need me, well then think about the day when I could be gone. Then..see where you will be. Probably lost on that island like everyone else trying to get off of it.

Oh..I am feeling good this week, because this is all I have to do for the next month. No ‘O.C.’ for me until November. Thank you very much..baseball! Now it doesn’t make me feel good that there is no ‘O.C.’ until November, but I have less to write this week. However, by the end of this month I will be up to two shows to recap and this column, so not much rest for me.

Anyways I will get to baseball and how stupid FOX is later on, but for now..we have other business to take care of…

Seinfeld Quote of the Week

“Who’s going to turn down a Junior Mint? It’s chocolate and peppermint…it’s delicious!”Kramer (In “The Junior Mint”, Kramer witnesses a medical operation and drops a Junior Mint into the patient…)

Now back to our regularly scheduled programming…

Columns a.k.a. How Do We Know This Many Words?!?!

DeeDee is back to review another show. This time it is ‘The Office’. I have not seen the show. Blame it on ‘The Amazing Race 8’ as it fills up that timeslot for me. But I have heard that it is funny. But does DeeDee think it’s funny? Hmm..find out for yourself. Actually..this office sounds like my “office” except not.

Sarah Quigley battles to the death this week. Actually..she compares the battle between the men and women on ‘The Apprentice’. I think she is a little biased seeing as she is a girl and all. But what do I know? She could be a guy for all I know. Of course..I kid. I love Sarah! And you will too once you read her newest column!

Matt Basilo deals with the problems of having a Monday column. That includes having wild weekends where you are too tired and too hungover to write. You add that with a slow computer and you have Matt..posting his column late. But better late than never. This week he comments on ‘Lost’, ‘The O.C.’, and ‘Reunion’. And that’s about it. Blame it on the alcohol or the computer!

Dora Malone moves to Tuesdays now. But she still has your ‘Survivor’ fix for the week. Or maybe just part of your fix. Who knows. But with ‘The O.C.’ being off the air until November..(Damn baseball..more about that later)..that means I have to chose whether I want to watch ‘Survivor’ or ‘Everybody Hates Chris’. I may give ‘Survivor’ a shot and see what all the fuss is about. But I still might have to tape ‘Everybody Hates Chris’..just to see what that is like as well. It’s easier to watch two shows at the same time than three shows at the same time.

Romo screwed up again. It seems no one on Pulse TV can make predictions. Is it a jinx or is that no one can make good predictions here? That is why I don’t do predictions for reality shows. It’s easier to do them for regular shows..sometimes. Other than that..Romo gives some analysis on the teams left in ‘The Amazing Race’.

Farah Syed discusses the fans this week. Too bad she has none..except ME..I’m #1! Anyways..do fans get no respect? Do some freaky fans even deserve respect? These are just some the questions that Farah may or may not answer for you in her latest column.

Patrick Gilchriest is watching ‘Survivor’ again this week. He has his thoughts on the latest episode. Feast your eyes on it!

Kevin Wong is like a pin-ball machine this week. He bounces back and forth from one topic to another. He talks about the sucky Houston Texans, he talks about some music..Canadian music, and then back to TV. Comments on ‘Prison Break’, ‘The Ultimate Fighter 2’, and some revised ‘Amazing Race’ and ‘Survivor’ predictions. Will they be good ones this time? Eh..probably not. But still read them anyways!

Recaps a.k.a. Get Your Own TiVo!!

Leland is back to reunite you with ‘Reunion’. He always manages to fall through the cracks on my Thursday night/Friday morning deadlines, but I will never fail to make sure he gets his plug!

John Duran has some ‘Lost’ for you. You really should be watching this anyways, so the recap may be a little pointless to some. But no..that would be incorrect. John gives insight to the show and you just can’t miss that!

Matt Basilo has the premiere of ‘Smallville’. I believe I can fly..I believe I can touch the sky, and so does Superman. He CAN fly and TOUCH the sky! Matt will be flying with him this year. Check it out!

Shaun Stidham has the first episode of the new season of ‘Alias’. Jennifer Garner..eh..not my style. But the show is still around. However..it would be #5 on my Thursday night viewing list. The O.C., Everybody Hates Chris, Survivor, Joey, AND then Alias. Therefore..there is ZERO chance I could watch this show. So it’s up to Shaun to fill me in. And if you watch one of the other shows like me..he can fill you in as well. Go now!

Kevin Wong has some more ‘Numb3rs’ for you. I can’t get enough of numbers, but I have only caught clips of this show. Kevin fills in the empty spaces. And believe me dealing with numbers have left a TON of empty spaces in my head!

Shaun Stidham has the newest episode of ‘The West Wing’. I have nothing to say here. But you should still read it nonetheless.

Patrick Puhl has some ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ for you. I will probably start watching this show too starting next week. Thank you “Summer”. So I will let you read what Patrick has to say about it, because I have nothing right now.

Kevin Wong is back LIVE with the new episode of ‘The Amazing Race’. I watched it live with him, because the show is good. Although..I watched it at my own house. Check it out!

Romo is back with the Sunday Night Lineup for FOX. However, only one show was new. The others were re-runs. Why? Because of baseball! Why? I have no clue as it didn’t start until Tuesday. It makes no sense to me, but it’s FOX..so there you go!

Tim Stevens is all about the number three this week. Yes..it’s Season #3 of ‘Nip/Tuck’ and this is a recap of Episode #3, but it also has to do with the number three as well. And threesomes. Are they good or bad? Depends on what kind you are talking about!

Craig Russell has the fourth episode of ‘Gilmore Girls’. Is it a piece of junk or priceless treasure? Find out!

John Duran is back home with the ‘Desperate Housewives’. I saw it and I have the same opinion as John. What is the opinion? Well..you know what to do!

Paul Meekin is back-to-back again. First, he is cooking with Martha this week. Whether she actually cooked or not this week..I don’t know. Second, he is hanging at the office with the Donald. What happens there? I don’t know, but you can find out! How? Glad you asked. Just click it!

Scott Keith has the newest rant for ‘Prison Break’. This will be the last one for about three weeks or so. So you better read it and make it last!

Trevor McKay invades your computer screens again this week. The new episode of ‘Invasion’ is recapped. Actually saw a few episodes over the weekend. Not a must-see for me, though. But Trevor has it for you still! Read it!

Sarah Jane Correia was LIVE with the new episode of ‘Survivor’. I was live with her, except only the second half. So it was semi-live. Although, you probably were watching this anyways. However, you do have 4 other choices! So maybe not. Yeah..so check out Sarah and her recap!

Joey Hart is no loser as she recaps episode four of ‘The Biggest Loser’. I watched it and I agree with her. Too bad you have to read it to find out what I mean!

This week we had a few DVD reviews as well.

Murtz Jaffer has the first season of The Amazing Race on DVD. See what all the fuss is about. See where this show first started. And see Murtz say bare-bones a few times. It’s worth the read!

Robert Sutton has the fourth season of Everybody Loves Raymond. Yeah..I have never seen an episode of this show, but yet..some say it is the greatest sitcom ever. I don’t know about that, but if you want to know what Robert has to say about it..you know what to do!

Celebrities, SPOILERS, and News a.k.a. Can We Get Some More..Please!!

So after me yelling at Romo last week about no spoilers..he comes out and puts out some spoilers. Too bad it was like 12 hours AFTER my deadline for my column. So I guess it worked. But it’s too late for me to talk about them as the actual shows will be up by the time this is posted. Oh well…

John, former ‘Apprentice’ star, is back with his thoughts on the latest episode. Although, this may be the second to latest episode as this was after my deadline as well. But you will still want to check out his comments as he was once in their shoes.

Former ‘Survivor’ star..Gregg makes his debut on Pulse TV. He gives his thoughts on the first episode of the new ‘Survivor’ and you can expect him to have more thoughts in the days to come.

Erin from ‘The Apprentice 3’ is making her debut as well this week. However, she does something a little different. She will have a heart attack if she comments on the new ‘Apprentice’. Therefore, she is sticking to the fashion of the show. Interesting. She is hot, though.

Former ‘Survivor’..Penny is back with her thoughts on the third episode of ‘Survivor: Guatemala’.

Another former ‘Survivor’ star..Coby is back with his thoughts on Stephanie and her coming back to this year’s show.

The Weekly Pulse Weekly Poll

Last week I asked the question…”what has been your favorite new show so far?” I got a lot more votes this week and it seemed that everyone has a new favorite show. But one stood out more than any other. Here are the results:

Prison Break – 10
My Name is Earl – 5
How I Met Your Mother – 2
Everybody Hates Chris – 1
Reunion – 1
Invasion – 0
Criminal Minds – 1

‘Prison Break’ is your winner and I expected that. Just like I expected ‘My Name is Earl’ to be second. They seem to be getting a lot of attention from everyone and I have heard nothing but positive things for both shows. So no real surprises here. By the way, my favorite new show is either ‘My Name is Earl’ or ‘How I Met Your Mother’.

Now to this week’s question, which has to do with what I will be talking about in a minute. It has to do with FOX and baseball and all of FOX’s TV shows that are being put off until next month for playoff baseball. The question is..”what do you think about FOX and baseball and the shows being put off for it?” Simple enough..sure. You can vote here.

Time to Talk a.k.a. Why Baseball Sucks?!?! a.k.a. Why FOX Sucks?!?!

Let me get this out of the way first. I am a baseball fan. It’s not my favorite sport. But I do follow it. My favorite team has always been the St. Louis Cardinals. So I want them to win. However, that doesn’t mean I watch all the games. Lets face it..the baseball season is a LONG one. 162 games. Only hardcore fans would want to watch that many games. And really..I don’t know of many people who watch all the games. As the season goes on..maybe a little more. But not me.

However, I do understand that playoff baseball is important. That is when most people watch baseball. That does not mean that I believe that FOX should air it. I know FOX is all about the ratings. And yes..they will probably get better ratings for this month than if they aired their regularly scheduled programming. But the gap between them may not be as big as you might think. Because new shows like ‘Bones’, ‘Prison Break’, and ‘Reunion’ have gained a good following so far. And I know plenty of people will be a little ticked off at FOX for this move. Will they be so mad..that they stop watching these shows? Probably not, but you never know. Other shows like ‘The O.C.’, ‘House’, and their Sunday night animated shows all have strong fan bases as well. These fans are more likely to come back. But what this does is let viewers watch other networks. They have the chance to catch some shows they may not have caught because they are on the same time as their favorite shows on FOX. So what if..they tune in for these others shows and they like them. They give them a shot and they start to like them for the next few weeks. What will happen when baseball is over?

I think..FOX could lose some of its viewers over this. Will it happen? Who knows, but it is possible. You may see a decline in viewers for their shows when they come back from baseball. Yes..the baseball ratings will be good, but what about the rest of the year. Are they willing to risk ratings for 11 months..just for one “good” month of ratings?

Baseball is on a decline these days. Many people have turned away from the sport. You have the steroid issue. You have Congress butting their heads into things. Baseball has gotten a black eye recently and that may turn off the casual fans. And thus..led them to watch other networks. If this was back in the late 90’s, when baseball was at its peak..this might not be a problem. But now it is a problem. Because now people can watch baseball LIVE over the Internet. They don’t need TV. If they really want to watch it..they can..anytime they want to. Technology has made it possible to follow a sport without ever watching it on TV.

Some would argue that it could be worse. In the past, FOX has put off debuting shows UNTIL November. I could go either way with this one. It may be worse to have to wait an extra two months for your favorite show to come back. But for the new shows..you wouldn’t know what you are missing, because you haven’t seen it yet. So for the new shows, it wouldn’t matter that much to wait. For the old shows, it would hurt a little. But think about this. Not everyone has a TiVo or records every show. So they may forget what actually has happened on these shows so far. Minor details could get lost on them. There would be a four week break after all between new shows. The viewing public has a short memory. In my opinion, waiting for something great is a lot harder than waiting for something that may or not be that good. It’s unknown, so how can you miss it? Am I happy that they started ‘The O.C.’ when they did? Of course..I am just saying it may have been better to hold off the new shows until November. Then they could have gained a following without being interrupted.

Will I be watching baseball? Maybe..maybe not. It depends on what else is on. Baseball will be a last resort for me. Unless the Cardinals make it to the World Series again..then I probably would watch. But that is weeks away. I will be VERY interested in seeing the ratings for baseball and comparing them to the shows they are taking over for. And then once those shows come back..I want to see those ratings and see how they compare.

It’s all about the money these days, but FOX may be losing out on the long run. You NEVER give your competition a chance to take over your business. FOX is leaving that door wide-open..it will be up to ABC, NBC, CBS, UPN, etc. to take full advantage of it!

Okay..well that does it for me this week. Any comments, questions, or suggestions is always welcome. Make sure to vote on the poll and read up on the week that was. You won’t be disappointed. Oh..and I have two new mottos for you..so here goes…

“When you are at the VERY bottom, it can only get better..you can ONLY go up!”

“I’m going to be hot before it gets hot!”

Finally..“You Can’t Fight Fate!”. See you next week!

I'm not embarrassed to say that my favorite television show of all-time is The O.C. I live by the motto "you can't fight fate!" More importantly, I watch WAY too much television, but I do so for the benefit of everyone reading this now. So to my mom and my wife, I say thanks for reading! To everyone else that might stumble across this, remember TiVo should be your best friend!
