ABC Programs Wipeout To Go Up Against the Super Bowl!

News

Super Bowl Sunday will pit the NFL’s top two teams against one another, sure. But halftime will feature another battle: The Boss vs. the Balls.

ABC will try to counter-program the biggest TV event of the year with a three-hour marathon of its goofy summer hit Wipeout on Sunday, Feb. 1. Most of the action will be in rerun form, but during halftime and following the game, the network will run a special “Cheerleaders vs. Couch Potatoes” segment aimed at siphoning away some viewers from NBC’s Super Bowl telecast.

The network is calling its stunt “Superball Sunday.” NBC will counter with a Super Bowl halftime show featuring Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band performing live.

The new Wipeout material will feature several revamped challenges in the show’s obstacle course, along with football-themed elements. The infamous Big Balls will be turned into oversized helmets, for instance, and in another challenge quarterbacks will fire paint-soaked footballs at contestants who are trying to complete a log-rolling task.

Pro Football Hall of Famer Michael Irvin will also be part of the broadcast, joining sideline reporter Jill Wagner. ABC also promises “more hilarious antics” after the game, which will put Wipeout in competition with NBC’s post-Super Bowl airing of The Office.

I'm not embarrassed to say that my favorite television show of all-time is The O.C. I live by the motto "you can't fight fate!" More importantly, I watch WAY too much television, but I do so for the benefit of everyone reading this now. So to my mom and my wife, I say thanks for reading! To everyone else that might stumble across this, remember TiVo should be your best friend!
