Welcome to What To Look Forward To!
Here is a quick look at some highlights on the shelves this week. DC is kicking off a few new series this month and Marvel’s Secret Wars continues with a handful of tie-ins. Unfortunately, a couple series are ending this Wednesday, so let’s take a look…
Archie #666 – Written by Tom DeFalco; Art by Pat Kennedy; Covers by Dan Parent
- The final issue for one of the longest running and most beloved series! It’s been quite a ride for Archie, Jughead, and the gang, especially in the last few years with stories such as The Death of Archie, Afterlife with Archie, and Archie vs. Predator! The series is ending to make way for a 21st-century reboot written by legend Mark Waid (Kingdom Come, Daredevil) with art by Fiona Staples (Saga, Mystery Society) due out next month. A new series for Jughead has been announced for later this year, too.
Airboy #1 – Written by James Robison; Art and Cover by Greg Hinkle
- Upon writing the return of classic 40’s action hero Airboy, James Robinson and Greg Hinkle find themselves face to face with the fictional character on a mission to set the two on the righteous path! The creators put themselves in their own world in this new series from Image Comics.
Samurai Jack #20 – Written by Jim Zub; Art and Covers by Andy Suriano
- Final issue! While I’m sad that the series is ending, I’m glad that the creators are able to end it on their own terms. Will Jack finally make his way home? Read Zub’s own thoughts on ending the series.
Age of Reptiles: Ancient Egyptians #1 – Story, Art, and Cover by Ricardo Delgado
- A completely wordless book, Age of Reptiles returns to tell a tale of dinosaurs in what we now know as northeast Africa. I’ve always enjoyed wordless comics so I’m excited to read a whole series in this style.
The Wicked + The Divine #11 – Written by Kieron Gillen; Art and Cover by Jamie McKelvie, variant cover by Fiona Staples
- The second arc comes to an end! I’m an issue or two behind so I can’t say much about what’s happening, but if you haven’t checked out this series yet now might be a good time to pick up Vol 1. The Faust Act as Vol 2. should be out soon.
DC’s New #1’s!
Convergence is over, and most DC titles this month are either new series or new arcs which makes this a great time to pick up any long-running series you’ve curious about or get in on the ground floor of something new. Here’s a list of some of the highly-anticipated new books and arcs coming out this week…
Batman Beyond #1 – Written by Dan Jurgens; Art and regular Cover by Bernard Chang, variant Cover Kalman Andrasofsky
- There’s a new man behind the mask and he’s been dropped into a world he’s entirely unfamiliar with. If you’ve read Future’s End, you know who it is, and if you haven’t, I won’t spoil it here.
Bat-Mite #1 – Written by Dan Jurgens; Art and Covers by Corin Howell
- The much-maligned Silver Age dimension-jumping imp returns to help and fix the DC Universe. This six-issue mini-series looks to be a fun one for all ages, for longtime fans old and new ones.
Bizarro #1 – Written by Heath Corson; Art and regular Cover by Gustavo Duarte, variant Cover by Kyle Baker
- Another all-ages mini-series featuring Superman’s worst friend!
Midnighter #1 – Written by Steve Orlando; Art and regular Cover by Aco, variant Cover by Bryan Hitch
- After co-starring in recent Grayson issues, Midnighter gets his own book as he tries to recover stolen items from the God Garden including something very personal to him.
Omega Men #1 – Written by Tom King; Art by Alec Morgan; regular Cover by Trevor Hutchison, variant Cover by Dustin Nguyen
Action Comics #41 – Written by Greg Pak & Aaron Kruder; Art and regular Cover by Aaron Kruder, Joker variant Cover by Darwyn Cooke
- The epic Superman crossover event “Truth” begins here and continues next week in Batman/Superman #21.
Justice League #41 – Written by Geoff Johns; Art and regular Cover by Jason Fabok, Joker variant Cover by David Finch
- “Darkseid War” begins! The epic event that’s been building since the New52 began is here!
Also with new arcs this week,
Green Arrow #41 – Written by Ben Percy; Art and regular Cover by Patrick Zircher, Joker variant Cover by Bill Sienkiewicz
and
Green Lantern #41 – Written by Robert Venditil; Art by Billy Tan & Mark Irwin; Cover by Billy Tan, Joker variant Cover by Ben Oliver
