Spoilers and review for Civil War II #1 follow.
Civil War II #1 opens with Marvel Comics’ heroes trying to learn more about the clairvoyant Inhuman Ulysses.
He can see the future and his mind cannot be read.
The distinction between Iron Man’s and Captain Marvel’s viewpoints become clear; Iron Man is dubious of how to use Ulysses “sight beyond sight” ;) and Captain Marvel wants to use it change the future.
The Amazing Spider-man is still witty despite seeing ma and pa argue over Ulysees as pa storms off….
Now, this where the Free Comic Book Day 2016 and Civil War #0 can be read. Full spoilers for both here.
Iron Man discovers that War Machine has died; he died at the hands of Thanos in the FCBD Civil War II issue. He’s livid and storms SHIELD.
Captain Marvel regales Iron Man of War Machine’s fate and notes that she loved him too and that the loss is deep.
They disagree about the mission.
She-Hulk, another casualty from the Free Comic Book Day offering of Civil War, witnesses the fight from her hospital bed and urges Captain Marvel to to fight for the future and do what’s needed to save lives…
…then She-Hulk dies with Captain Marvel resolved to change the future by utilizing Ulysses.
Iron Man storms off, before realizing She-Hulk has died, angry about War Machine’s death and the needless mission Captain Marvel took her team on against Thanos that cost War Machine his life.
That’s a wrap for Civil War II #1.
I enjoyed the art and the pacing; even the recap of what happened in the FCBD 2016 Civil War II offering. However, I expected more from the issue. In essence it sets up the mini-series when one would have reasonably expected that to have been done by the two issues that have been released so far: FCBD 2016’s Civil War II and Civil War II #0. In the end, Civil War II #1 gets the ball rolling and those previous two issues I mentioned were filler.
I’m looking forward to see some real movement in the plot in Civil War II #2. We do know it will be a gorgoeus looking book on art after being dazzled by that in issue one.
