Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band plays on Blu-ray

Disc Announcements

In the world of cinema, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band is a cautionary tale of what can go wrong when you think you’ve got all the right elements in place. Producer Robert Stigwood had the magic touch with everything from managing Cream, putting on Hair and Jesus Christ Superstar on stage and bringing Tommy and Saturday Night Fever to the screen. So he brought together the hottest singing stars of 1977 in The Bee Gees and Peter Frampton with the music of The Beatles iconic record for a massive musical. He hired the director of Car Wash. He had tested the concept out as a stage musical. He even hire Aerosmith to be the rival band. This was a project that had so much heat that it burned up on impact. The film quickly become one of those classic “so weird you have to see it” epics. Now you can see it in Blu-ray when it gets released on September 26. Here’s the press release from Shout! Factory:

The one and only Billy Shears (multi-platinum recording artist Peter Frampton) and his best friends the Hendersons (Rock and Roll Hall of Famers The Bee Gees) are four young men from the quaint little town of Heartland. With superstardom calling, this fabulous foursome leaves Heartland – and Billy’s beloved Strawberry Fields (Sandy Farina) – vulnerable to mean Mr. Mustard, who steals Sgt. Pepper’s magical instruments for a fiendish, “evil force that would poison young minds, pollute the environment, and subvert the democratic process.” It’s up to our heroes to save everything they hold dear with the power of music, kindness, and heart.

Featuring performances by Aerosmith, George Burns, Steve Martin, Earth, Wind & Fire, and more, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band is a magical, musical tour through some of the greatest songs ever written, and an astounding time capsule of the late 70s unlike anything you’ve ever seen or heard.
