The first two matches in the WWE’s Global Cruiserweight Series were completed today at Progress Wrestling in London.

Both matches were notable for a lack of traditional Cruiserweight high flying manoeuvres, concentrating instead on chain and submission wrestling. With the live crowd lapping it up, it’ll be interesting to see what the worldwide audience make of the technical abilities of both winners.

Zack Sabre Jnr defeats Flash Morgan Webster via submission

ZSJ put on a submission clinic and could probably challenge Dean Malenko’s list of holds. A remarkable technician, he is a talent that could genuinely go far in this competition and would be a welcome addition on NXT. As well as a plethora of submissions, Webster absorbed some brutal kicks, and despite multiple 360 attempts, was forced to tap to the You Are Here Now, which Sabre Jnr freely admitted to me he should rename.

Jack Gallagher defeats Pete Dunne via Submission

Jack Gallagher is effectively a British Vaudvillain, and the live crowd were firmly behind him both thanks to his natural charisma and some solid heel work from the Bruiserweight Pete Dunne, who sneaks underneath the weight limit presumably after losing a solitary eyelash. Dunne was eventually bested by a modified Calf Crusher to progress alongside ZSJ.
