Following my exclusive interview with writer Dan Jurgens on The New 52 Futures End yesterday, and DC Comics’ release of all 41 of the New 52 Futures End 3D covers and solicitations for September 2014, the weekly series’ fourth issue hits stands today.
To get you caught up before you dig into The New 52 Futures End, below are recaps and spoilers for this weekly series so far:
- The New 52 Futures End #0 with the New 52 debut of Batman Beyond and death of one of DC’s trinity.
- The New 52 Futures End #1 with the death of a Justice Leaguer.
- The New 52 Futures End #2 with the debut of the masked Superman.
- The New 52 Futures End #3 with the return of a different hero thought to be dead.
Spoilers and a capsule review follow for The New 52 Futures End #4.
You have been warned.
Lois Lane discerned last issue that Red Robin was alive and didn’t die many years ago with the rest of the Teen Titans. She confronts him directly just as he learns, via massive TV news feeds, that a new Batman (in fact Batman Beyond) has hit the streets. This was likely uploaded to the ‘net by Mister Terrific’s people as alluded to in last week’s issue.
We also see Grifter’s subplot take center stage to cap off the issue. He can now see all manner of “aliens” on Earth nor just Daemonites. So that includes Durlans, Martians and even those from Earth 2. He happens upon an alien bloodbath and is recruited, unwillingly, by King Faraday who makes his New 52 debut in this DC Comics title.
King Faraday’s classic Who’s Who bio is included on the below right in case you’re interested in the character’s roots.
And the book ends like previous one’s with a look to the next issue: The New 52 Futures End #5 next week.
I’m still enjoying this yarn and the art for issue #4 was top-notch.
This issue could have used more Batman Beyond, but with such a diverse cast for a weekly book, I can wait for the next installment. The Frankenstein subplot is the one that least appeals to me (so far) and Firestorm was pretty much MIA this issue, but it looks that changes next week.
Thanks for reading. All feedback welcome.
