Marvel Comics Universe & Lords Of Empyre: Celestial Messiah #1 Spoilers & Review: Family Trauma Exposed For Swordsman, Mantis & Quoi?!

Spoilers

Marvel Comics Universe and Lords Of Empyre: Celestial Messiah #1 Spoilers and Review follows.

Family Trauma Exposed For Swordsman, Mantis and Quoi?!

First, Lords of Empyre Hulkling #1 (full spoilers here). Second, this week’s Lords of Empyre: Celestial Messiah #1. Third, Lords of Empyre: Swordsman #1 out on August 19, 2020.

We open with a storyline catch-up and creators’ credits page.

Then father Swordsman is taking his son Quoi aka Celestial Messiah to…

…some kind of personal trial.

A plant avatar based on his mother Mantis emerges and…

…reveals how she met his father when they were both flesh.

A love blossomed, but…

…he died and…

…the Swordsman’s body was taken over by a seemingly unhinged…

…Cotati elder.

We do get some heartache as we see what happened to Quoi when his plant based powers emerged; he’s half human and half Cotati after all.

The story concludes with Quoi overcoming the mental stimuli of Mantis and destroying the avatar which…

…was actually connect to his real mother Mantis who was trying to, and failed, to set her son on a different path.

The book ends with a tease of the final Lords of Empyre focussing on the Swordsman out on August 19, 2020.

The Pulse:

Considering the Empyre Handbook #1 (full spoilers here) also came out this week, as did Empyre #4 (full spoilers here) – not Empyre #3 as noted on the last page above – this whole issue felt irrelevant and unnecessary as written yet this one-shot conceptually had some much potential. Story was meh and added nothing substantive to Quoi’s backstory excluding maybe the two pages from when he dressed up as his dad and his Cotati powers triggered. Art was inconsistent and flat. 3 out of 10.
